Monza lies 162 meters above sea level in Lombardy, between Brianza and Milan. In terms of distance, it is 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the region’s capital, though it is less than 5 kilometers (3 miles) away from its borders. Lecco and Como are about 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from Monza. Milan shares its metro area with Monza, which is a big part of the new province of Monza.

Climate
The climate in Monza is typical of the submediterranean region of the Po valley, with cool, short winters and warm summers; temperatures in January average two °C (36 °F) and in July about 23 °C (73 °F). There is abundant rainfall in the city and surrounding areas, with most occurring in autumn and little in winter and summer; despite this, neither suffers from droughts.
History
Human activity in the area dates back to at least the Bronze Age, when people lived in pile-dwelling settlements above rivers and marshes, according to funerary urns in the late 19th century.
Modicia was the name of Monza during the Roman Empire. The Romans subdued the Insubres in the third century BCE after crossing the Alps and settling around Mediolanum (now Milan). There is a Gallo-Celtic village on the Lambro that the Insubres themselves may have founded. Near today’s Ponte dei Leoni (Lions Bridge) are the ruins of a Roman bridge named Ponte d’Alene.
She chose Monza for her summer residence after she married the Lombard king Authari (and later Agilulf) and was the daughter of Garibald I of Bavaria. St. John the Baptist was the patron saint of the oracle she founded in 595. Her husband was hunting when Theodelinda, asleep, saw a dove in a dream telling her: modo (Latin for “here”), indicating that the oracle should be built there. The queen replied: Etiam, meaning “forks.” Monza’s medieval name, “Modoetia,” comes from both of these words, according to legend. The future Royal Palace was also built here by her.
The headquarters of Berengar I of Italy (850-924) were located in Monza. Hungarian incursions were resisted by constructing a fortified castrum. Berengar’s reign saw Monza achieve some degree of independence: the city had its weights and measures, could seize property, and sign deeds. By donating numerous works to the Monza Cathedral, including the famous cross, and giving enormous benefits to its 32 canons and other churches, Berengar showed his generosity.
Cuisine
Insubrian and Brianza cuisine are characteristic of Monza. It is connected with the local culinary traditions, especially with Milanese cuisine. Risotto with luganega, cassoulet, and buseca are typical dishes.
