Münster Cathedral 

The city emblem is a stirring medieval cathedral from the 12th and 13th centuries. It has two Romanesque towers from the 1100s that are its oldest architectural features.

Historical City Hall 

On the east side of Prinzipalmarkt, the Historical City Hall is an exemplary piece of secular Gothic architecture that you must see. The facade is staggering and breathtaking and will require a few minutes to admire.

Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History 

There is a state museum just a few steps from the cathedral. It has an impressive collection of artwork from your niche (target region) over many centuries. Much of this has religious origins, like the Liesborner Altar which is the pinnacle of Westphalian Late Gothic art and was painted in the last third of the 14th-15th centuries

Prinzipalmarkt 

The square around the City Hall can tell you all you need to know about Münster’s prestige in Medieval and Renaissance times. On the west side, there’s a continuous row of historic, gabled buildings made from a distinctive material called Münster limestone.

St. Lamberti 

One of the best examples of late gothic design, the Church of St. Lamberti was built during the 14th and 15th centuries and forms a major landmark on the popular Prinzipalmarkt.

Picasso Museum 

This specialized art museum has more than 800 lithographs by Pablo Picasso, making up almost the entirety of his printed oeuvre. These were mostly collected by the Münster native Gert Huizinga, who forged a friendship with the artist’s ex-lover Marie.

Burg Hülshoff 

Ten kilometers from the historic center of Münster, you will find Renaissance Castle on a picturesque hill and the birthplace of poet and author Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Born in 1797 this castle is one of her inspirations for depicting Westphalia as an imaginary Kingdom. The property is a “Wasserburg”, a moated castle that has been turned into a museum you can visit by taking an audio-guided tour.

Aasee 

In under 10 minutes’ walk, to the Prinzipalmarkt, you will come across Aasee. It is a 40-hectare lake southwest of the historic city center. 

Allwetterzoo Münster 

The zoo is a continuation of Aasee’s green shores and has around 3,000 animals of 300 species. These walkways offer shelter no matter what the condition. The name comes from their system of covered walkways that offer shelter in all conditions.

Stadtmuseum Münster 

The City Museum on Salzstraße takes you through Münster’s extensive past, from its foundation in the ninth century to the present day. There are reconstructed rooms from the 1950s as well as reconstructions of cages used to display the bodies of John of Leiden and other Anabaptists at St. Lamberti, dating back to the 16th century.

Westfälisches Museum für Naturkunde 

If the weather changes for the worse, you always have a backup plan in place at this wonderful science museum. There are exhibits covering all sorts of scientific areas, like paleontology, biology, geology, anthropology, and astronomy to name just a few.

Muhlenhof Freilichtmuseum 

Münsterland’s rural history comes alive at the open-air museum. Here, some 30 buildings from around this region have been taken and preserved.

Botanischer Garten 

The University of Münster is responsible for the botanical garden, which is not far west of Altstadt. The environment is special because it’s located in what used to be the city’s fortress and you can easily see its star-shaped outline left by the moats.

Cycling 

There are over 500,000 bicycles in Münster, and this is twice the number of people living there. The city has taken measures to encourage bikes, so there are three stations for safe parking.
