In southeastern Spain, Murcia is a university city and the capital of the same region. The architectural highlight of the town is the Plaza Cardenal Belluga, where the cathedral, which combines Gothic and baroque styles, and the colorful Palacio Episcopal stand in stark contrast to the modern Ayuntamiento (city hall) annex built in the 1990s.
Humans have lived on this territory since prehistoric times. People lived in the current municipality during the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The Argaric people occupied part of the present municipality during the late Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages. At the end of the Bronze Age and the Iron Age’s beginning, the Iberians inhabited the current city. A religious building called De la Luz Iberian Sanctuary is a beautiful site. During the Roman rule on the Iberian Peninsula, traces of people’s presence can be found. Castillo de Los Garres, a fortress built during the late Roman period in the northern half of the municipality, is an example of a late Roman construction on the Iberian Peninsula.
Myrtle or murtea, the Latin word for myrtle (the plant is known to grow in the general area), is widely believed to have inspired Murcia’s name. Still, it may also have derived from the Latin word Murtia (Murtius was a common Roman name that meant village). In addition, it may have received its name from the Latin Murtae (Mulberry), which dominated the regional landscape for many centuries. Eventually, Murcia became Mursiya, and then Mursiya became Mursiya.
With the creation of its autonomous community by the central government in 1982, Murcia became the capital of the Murcia province and city. The city has grown into Spain’s seventh most populous municipality and has become a thriving service city.
As a result of the 5.1 Mw Lorca earthquake, the Region of Murcia was shaken on 11 May 2011 by a peak Mercalli intensity of VII (‘Powerful’). It resulted in the deaths of nine people and the injuries of more than 400 others.
Murcia lies near the center of a fertile low-lying plain known as the Huerta (orchard or vineyard). Through this area runs the Segura River and its right-hand tributary, the Guadalent? n. A total of 882 square kilometers (341 square miles) of space is covered by the city’s municipality at an elevation of 43 meters (141 feet) above sea level.
The climate of Murcia is hot and semi-arid (Köppen climate classification: BSh). Because it is inland, it experiences mild winters and scorching summers. The average number of sunny days per year exceeds 320. Rains can be heavy and torrential in Murcia occasionally.
January is the coldest month of the year, with an average high of 16.6 °C (62 °F) during the day and a low of 4.7 °C (40 °F) at night. August is the warmest month, with temperatures ranging from 34.2 °C (94 °F) during the day to 20.9 °C (70 °F) at night.
By population, Murcia is Spain’s seventh most populous municipality (INE 2021). The metropolitan area contains 672,773 inhabitants, making it the twelfth most populous in Spain after Alcantarilla, Alguazas, Beniel, Molina de Segura, Santomera, and Las Torres de Cotillas. Despite Murcia’s large municipal territory, its population density (547 inhabitants/km2, 760 households per square mile) does not rank among Spain’s highest.
As of 2021, 12.52 % of the municipality’s population reported having a foreign nationality – 3.22% from other European countries, 5.01% from Africa, 3.68% from America, and 0.61% from Asia.
Christians make up the majority of the population. In addition, there is a sizeable atheist community.
Murcia is primarily an agricultural and tourism center; the municipality’s land is devoted to crops to 33.1%. Agriculture and fishing account for 35.3% of 2019 employment agreements, and cropland labor accounts for 9.84% of 2016.
7.79% of agreements in 2019 were related to the industry sector, while 5.91% of the accords in the second half of 2016 were related to the industry sector. As of the second half of 2016, 53.12% of agreements involved jobs in the service sector, and 14.26% were active server jobs.
In addition to fairs and congresses, museums, theatres, cinemas, music, aquariums, restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, campsites, sports, and international students, Murcia’s economy is supported by fairs and congresses.
The city is home to several high schools, elementary schools, and professional schools. Murcia has three types of schools for children: private schools such as El Limonar International School, Murcia (a British international school) and King’s College, Madrid, The American School of Murcia (an American international school), semi-private schools (concertado), which are private schools that receive government funding and sometimes offer religious instruction, and public schools such as Colegio Publico (C.P.) San Pablo, IES Licenciado Francisco Cascales, or the centenary CP Cierva Peñafiel, is one of the oldest.
People who don’t usually enjoy cities will enjoy Murcia as a city break destination. The historic center has quiet streets and beautiful architecture that give the feel of being in a small town. In addition, the surrounding landscape is perfect for some brilliant day trips along the coast or in the countryside.
Aside from its Huerta and fruits and vegetables exported throughout Spain and Europe, Murcia is known for its folklore, festivals, and numerous baroque churches.
With Murcia being such a beautiful, healthy, relaxing, and unwinding region, it is the ideal location for ex-pats looking to escape it all and enjoy life in their new Spanish home. Ahh, this is true bliss! This concludes the ex-pat guide to moving to Murcia in 2022.
