Neumünster Overview
In the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, lies Neumünster. The municipality has over 79,000 registered residents, making it Schleswig-Holstein’s fourth-largest municipality (after Kiel, Lübeck, and Flensburg). The City has the Holstenhallen and Stadthalle as important trade fair locations.
History
According to historical records, Wippendorp im Gau Faldera was first mentioned in 1127. During this time, Bishop Vicelinus received a missionary assignment from the Archbishop of Bremen. The new monastery was built in 1136 by Vicelinus (Latin: novum monastery, Greco-Latin: Neomonasterium, German: neues Kloster or neues Münster). As a result, the current name, “Novum monasterium,” replaced the previous names of Wippendorf and Faldera.
A town privilege was granted to Neumünster in April 1870. Neumünster has been an “independent city” (German: Kreisfreie Stadt) since 1903 since it is not part of a district.
Großflecken (English: Large spot), a large, centrally-located street and public space in the City, became a place for civil unrest several times. In March 1848, riots broke out at Großflecken as part of the German Revolution and again in 1923 during inflation.
Rural People’s Movement protested the City as part of the farmers’ protest movement in northern Germany from 1928 to 1933, which inspired Hans Fallada to write A Small Circus (Bauern, Bonzen und Bomben). Hans Fallada is the recipient of the City’s Hans Fallada Prize.
A Nazi Party was founded in Schleswig-Holstein in 1925 by Hinrich Lohse. It was at Hofbräu München, a brewery in Großflecken, that Neumünster’s local Nazi Party met. The local members were addressed by Joseph Goebbels in 1926. According to reports, there were 29 Nazi Party members in 1929, but the number grew to 400 the following year and over 2,000 by 1932. Großflecken was renamed Adolf-Hitler-Platz (English: Adolf Hitler Place) shortly after the Nazis came to power. K.Z. Sachsenhausen was the destination of all Jewish men arrested during Kristallnacht in 1938.
In 1945, Neumünster was bombed repeatedly by Allied forces because of its importance as a railway junction and industrial City. May 1945 marked the British takeover of the City.
As a result of the founding of Schleswig-Holstein and the first municipal election in Neumünster after the war in 1946, the state of Schleswig-Holstein was formed.
In 1566, Neumünster’s first fulling mill was constructed, marking the beginning of its textile industry. Due to competition from overseas, Neumünster’s last cloth factory closed in the early 1990s as the industry left the City. Recent decades have seen Neumünster’s unemployment rate rise relative to the national average due to this and other factors.
About 15,000 square meters of space were leased by McArthurGlen Group in 2012 for an outlet shopping center.

It comprises nine neighborhoods: Böcklersiedlung-Bugenhagen, Brachenfeld-Rutenberg, Einfeld, Faldera, Gadeland, Gartenstadt, Stadtmitte, Tungendorf, and Wittorf.
The Neumünster station is a major railway junction with lines running in six directions (formerly seven), including the Hamburg-Altona-Kiel and Neumünster-Flensburg lines.
At Ehndorf, near Neumünster, a high-power medium wave transmission facility is used by Deutschlandfunk, known incorrectly as the “Neumünster transmitter.”
In the City, there is an airfield and a hospital. The utility company, “Stadtwerke Neumünster” (SWN), also manages a local inter-city bus route. Sundays and holidays will no longer be served by SWN’s intercity buses; instead, an on-demand shuttle van will be offered, requiring an additional comfort surcharge on top of regular bus fares.
Education
On its Neumünster campus, the University of Applied Sciences Kiel offers a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Geography
Neumünster lies along the rivers Schwale and Stör, near the geographical center of Schleswig-Holstein, 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Kiel, 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Hamburg, and 72 kilometers (45 miles) west of Lübeck. There is a nature park near the town of Aukrug.
