Neuss Overview
Neuss is a city on the west bank of the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It’s opposite Dusseldorf and is known for its Roman heritage as well as for hosting the yearly Neusser Bürgerwehrrennen race.
Ancient Rome
The city of Neuss was founded in 16 BC by the Romans as a military fortification, hence the original name “castrum”. Today it’s north of this fortification and on the confluence of two rivers. Its current name is Neuss.
This legion was part of the Roman army and was stationed here during 43-70. It surrendered during the Batavian rebellion.
Novaesium was founded as a town in the early centuries of the Roman empire. It was built in an area at the center of today’s Novaesium which had been inhabited since ancient times.
Middle Ages
Neuss entered a period of growth during medieval times due to its prime location on several routes by the crossing of the great Rhine valley and with its harbor and ferry. In the 10th century, the remains of Saint Quirinus, who was a martyr & tribune during Roman times, had been relocated to Neuss. This has led to pilgrimages to the shrine of St. Quirinus from other countries in addition to the people within the Holy Roman Empire. In 1138, Neuss was first documented as a town.
The siege of Neuss deserves a mention in the town’s history. In 1474-75, the citizens withstood it and were therefore rewarded by the Holy Roman. It’s well known that Neuss was granted the right come to mint its coins and to carry the imperial coat of arms, which includes the imperial eagle, in its coat of arms. The town has also been a member of the Hanseatic League since 1303 although it never became an official member.
Early modernity
The city of Neuss has seen many fires over the years and during the reign of King Louis XIV, there were a lot of wars that made it hard for Neuss to maintain its finances. In the 17th century, Neuss started to lose its importance as a trading post and became more of an agricultural town.
Neuss was originally a part of the Electorate of Cologne but eventually became part of France. Neuss then became a town once again but this time under the rule of Napoleon. In 1815, after the Napoleonic Wars, Neuss was merged with Prussia and became a district. It has six municipalities – Neuss, Dormagen, Nettesheim, Nievenheim, Rommerskirchen, and Zons. The town had a population of 6,333 people at that time and was part of the Prussian Province of Jülich-Cleves-Berg. It came under the jurisdiction of the Rhine Province in 1822.
19th century – present
Neuss regained its economic power in the 19th century, with the establishment of an internationally renowned harbor in 1835. This was followed by significant industrial expansion. In 1881, Neuss became a member of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and finally, it joined Thuringia after World War II.
In the early 20th century, the German town Neuss was renamed Neuß. Thirty years later in 1968, a spelling change was approved by the National Advisory Board on Geographical Names.
Sports
One sports club is the Neusser Schlittschuh Club. They have sections for many sports like figure skating, ice stock sport, and bandy, which they are the only club in Germany to offer. Due to the lack of a large ice surface, the variety rink bandy is played in Neuss. There are also two football clubs in the city of Neuss: VfR Neuss Football Club and DJK Novesia Neuss. The city has a field hockey club, HTC Schwarz-Weiss Neuss, and TC Blau-Weiss Neuss, a famous tennis club where Nadal began his career. And there’s an American football club called the Neuss Frogs. Besides, Neuss also has a Racecourse called “Galopprennbahn”.
