To the west of Milan, Novara is the capital city of the Piedmont region in northwest Italy, near the town of Novara. It is the second most populous city in Piedmont after Turin, with 101,916 residents.
Novara was founded by the Romans around 89 B.C. when the local Gauls became Roman citizens. Nov means “new,” and Aria represents “the surrounding region,” a name used by the Cisalpine Gauls.
Novaria, which dates to the time of the Ligures and the Celts, was an ancient municipium located on the road between Vercellae (Vercelli) and Milan (Mediolanum). Due to its perpendicular location (still intact today), it dates back to Roman times. A century after being destroyed by Magnus Maximus for supporting Valentinian II, the city was rebuilt by Theodosius I. Subsequently, Radagaisus and Attila sacked it.
During the Lombard era, Novara was a duchy; it was a countship during Charles the Fat’s reign. As a result, Novara enjoyed the rights of a free imperial city. In 1110, Henry V conquered and destroyed it, but in 1167 it became a member of the Lombard League. It became practically a dominion of the Visconti and later of the Sforza after it accepted the protection of Milan at the end of the 12th century. The French troops besieging Novara were routed by Swiss mercenaries serving for the Sforzas of Milan in the Battle of Novara in 1513. As a result of this defeat, the French invasion of Italy in the War of the League of Cambrai ended.
Novara, which had been promised long ago by Filippo Maria Visconti to Amadeus VIII of Savoy, was occupied by Savoyard troops in 1706. Together with Milan, the city became a part of the Habsburg Empire with the Peace of Utrecht. Novara passed to the House of Savoy the following year after occupying it in 1734.
Novara experiences warm summers, cold winters, and partly cloudy skies all year round. Most of the year, the temperature varies between 27°F and 85°F, rarely falling below 19°F or rising above 91°F. It is best to visit Novara from late June to mid-August to participate in hot-weather activities.
Novara had 102,862 residents in 2007, of whom 49% were males, and 51% were females. A total of 16.35% of the population is under the age of 18, compared to 21.6% of the population is over the age of 65. It compares with the Italian average of 18.06% for minors and 19.94% for pensioners. Novara residents are 44 years old on average, compared with 42 years old for Italians. Novara’s population grew by 1.64% between 2002 and 2007, while Italy grew by 3.85%. Compared to the Italian average of 9.45 births per 1,000 inhabitants, Novara has 9.15 births per 1,000.
