Novo Mesto Overview
Located on a bend of the Krka River in southeastern Slovenia, Novo Mesto is a city in the City Municipality of Novo Mesto. In the historical Lower Carniola region, the town has traditionally been considered the economic and cultural center.
Name
In historical sources, Novo Mesto was referred to as Růdolfswerde (and as Rudolfswerd in 1392 and Noua Mesta in 1419). Rudolfswerth (spelled Rudolfswerth in the modern era) is a compound of Rudolf and wert, which translates to ‘island, peninsula, land above water, and honors Rudolf IV, Duke of Austria, who conferred town rights on the settlement in 1365. A similar German name, Newest, was used in 1365 (probably a translation of the Slovene title). There is no record of the name of the settlement before 1365. Slovene names like Novo Mesto are often used to describe settlements built on sites where older ones were burned or otherwise destroyed. A Slovene name was officially given to the town from 1865 to 1918: Rudolfovo. Upon the dissolution of Austria-Hungary after World War I, the city became part of Yugoslavia and was officially renamed Novo Mesto.
History
There has been a settlement in Novo Mesto since prehistory. The city has been nicknamed the “City of Situlas” after numerous situlas found in the area, one of Europe’s most important archeological sites of the Hallstatt culture (Early Iron Age). It was first mentioned in an 1170 deed that Graben Castle, the ancestral residence of the noble House of Graben von Stein, existed on the Krka River. A town called Rudolfswerth was founded on 7 April 1365 by Habsburg archduke Rudolf IV of Austria. Austrian Habsburgs received the Carniolan March from Louis IV, the Holy Roman Emperor, King of Italy, and Duke of Bavaria, in 1335, and Rudolf “the Founder” declared himself Duke of Carniola in 1364.
As part of the Province of Ljubljana during World War II, the city was controlled by Fascist Italy until Mussolini’s downfall in 1943. From then until the end of the war, it was occupied by Nazi Germany.
A motorway connecting the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, and Zagreb in Croatia, which passed through Novo Mesto, was built by the authorities of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1958. E70, the European route, is a continuation of the A2 motorway. After its construction, Novo Mesto became an important regional center with better connections to Slovenia and Yugoslavia.
Demographics
Novo Mesto has a predominantly Slovene population. A Roma settlement called Abjak, also called Brezje, lies on the southeast outskirts of the town.

Summers are warm in Novo Mesto, winters are freezing and snowy, and the weather is partly cloudy. Temperatures typically range from 27°F to 81°F throughout the year and rarely drop below 15°F or rise above 90°F. Mid-June to early September is the best time to visit Novo Mesto if you want warm-weather activities.
Culture
Novo Mesto has been a center of artistic creation in various fields, including music, literature, and visual arts. In Slovenia, avant-garde art began with the exhibition Novo Mesto Spring in September 1920, which brought together artists from different genres.
Religion
Novo Mesto became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Novo Mesto on 7 April 2006, a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana.
