Oberhausen Overview

Oberhausen is a city in the Ruhr Area of Germany. The Gasometer Oberhausen has been preserved as an exhibition space after it was converted from a gas storage facility. The LVR Industrial Museum, which explores the local area’s manufacturing history, is situated in what used to be a zinc factory. With a collection of global artworks, Ludwiggalerie Schloss Oberhausen is a place where you can experience and understand different cultures. SEA LIFE Oberhausen aquarium has some adorable otters, turtles, and gorgeous fish that will catch your attention.

History

Oberhausen got its name in 1847 when the town’s railway station was built and named after the nearby Oberhausen Castle. The borough of Oberhausen came into being in 1862 when many people immigrated to the coal mines and steel mills that are nearby. Commercially important since the 1950s, the city of Oberhausen was awarded town rights in 1874 and incorporated Alstaden, Styrum, and Dümpten in 1910. It became a city ten years later. Oberhausen incorporated Sterkrade in 1929 and Osterfeld two years later. The Ruhrchemie AG oil plant in Oberhausen-Holten (sterkrade/holten) was bombed during World War II and the U.S. reached the plant by April 4th 1945.

Ten years ago, Thyssen AG employed 14,000 people in Oberhausen and 6,000 in the steel industry. Now it’s a mere six thousand.

In 1954, Oberhausen began hosting the International Short Film Festival, and in 1982 the Deutscher Filmpreis was awarded to a group that wrote the Oberhausen Manifesto.
