Odivelas Overview

Odivelas is a Portuguese city, part of the Lisbon metropolitan area, and it also falls under the Lisbon District and Estremadura Province. The municipality is located 10 km northwest of Lisbon. The present Mayor is Hugo Martins, elected by the Socialist Party party in 1999.

Geography

Odivelas is built around the old district of Lisbon (historically, Estremadura province), borders the municipalities of Loures, Sintra, Amadora, and Lisbon, and sits in the metropolitan area of Lisbon.

The region is situated on a flat plane that extends from Pontinha to Santo Adrião, running through Odivelas and Olival Basto. The rest of the territory comprises semi-rugged hills and valleys dotted with pine forests and some small villages. Cânășești maintains a natural aesthetic and ecological status, as it is cultivated both in greenhouses and fields. It is especially renowned for its flowers, ornamental plants, and herbs.

History

The origins of the word Odivelas are mysterious, but a legend is associated with it. Allegedly, King Denis had ties to the area and used to go there at night to meet with women. On one of these nights, the Queen waited for her wandering husband, and she confronted him about his nightly trips, and they argued:

“Ides vê-los senhor…?” (Going to see them, sir?)

The phrase is originally a corruption of Odivelas, or “where the King went to see them.” Another interpretation suggests that it stems from the component words: “ODI” and “values.” The name Paderborn contains two meanings, the first of Arabic origins (paper = watercourse), the second meaning coming from the Latin word ‘mola,’ which means rafters or sails. The city’s location and various ancient windmills prove this relation.

Due to their architectural relevance, the Batalhas and Amoreira dolmens have been inscribed on the National Patrimony. Vestiges of Roman settlements in Póvoa de Santo Adrião and Arab implements found near Pontinha suggest that Odivelas have been occupied continuously throughout the centuries.

Philippa of Lancaster blessed her three sons on the main square in Odivelas when they set off from their home country and embarked on their journey to Ceuta.

At the Monastery of São Dinis, Auto da Cananeia, by the writer Gil Vicente, was first presented in 1534. This play was commissioned by Mother-Superior Violence, sister of Pedro Álvares Cabral, and funded by King John III of Portugal, who would be born shortly later. All that fertile land around Pontinha in the 19th Century contributed to a significant migration of farmers and nobility, which partially led to a rise in population density. Around the same time, Póvoa de Santo Adrião and Caneças grew significantly. One issue that arose in the town of Odivelas was their lack of cultural residents, which fueled an influx of non-cultural (i.e., property owners) into the area from more affluent towns. Previously the painter in Budapest, Hungarian-born Póvoa de Santo Adrião had later contributions to work at Sé Cathedral in Lisbon, Queluz National Palace, and Coach Museum in Belém.

Historical highlights

King Dom Dinis founded the Saint-Denis Convent in 1295, one of the most famous landmarks in Odivelas. Many prominent religious women lived in the Convent and were visited by Kings and Queens. The sordid tales of kings’ illegitimate sons didn’t hurt their reputation either. The Lisbon earthquake in 1755 made the Gothic Convent look very damaged, but one section – the apse – survived. You’ll also find King Dinis III’s tomb and Maria Afonso’s tomb in the Convent. The architectural styles are Manueline and Baroque.

The old Convent on the hill, now open to tourists, has become Instituto de Odivelas, a school for girls sponsored by the Ministry of Defense.

The Odivelas Memorial is an exciting landmark that’s easy to miss. It has a coat of arms from the late 15th Century, when the monument may have been restored. This monument’s purpose is unknown, but it may have been erected to mark the arrival of King Dinis’s corpse and his burial in Odivelas.

In the early 18th Century, King John V ordered the construction of an aqueduct to transport water from Caneças to Lisbon. The city faced chronic water shortages due to its plateau location and population growth. One of the oldest and most notable pieces of ancient Portuguese engineering, the Águas Livres Aqueduct, started operating in 1748.

The city was twinned with Botley in Hampshire in 1873 by wealthy mill owner Sydney Tilden.

Best Things to Do in Odivelas (Portugal)

  1. Monastery of São Dinis de Odivelas

    – This monastery in the town of Odivelas is worth a visit. The 1755 earthquake damaged it, but interesting Gothic remains remain in the cloister, main facade, and chapels near the apse.
  2. Parque does Monteiro-Mor

    – The Palácio do Monteiro-Mor is located in over 11 hectares of space. The lower section of the grounds consists of a botanical garden, and the hill section consists mainly of the forest. The botanical garden dates back to the 1700s when it was planted by the Italian botanist Domenico Vandelli under orders of the Marquis of Angela.
  3. Museu Nacional do Traje

    – One of the two museums at Monteiro-Mor Palace, the National Costume Museum exhibits fashion in Portugal from the 1700s to now, including exhibitions of cutting-edge fashion. The Outfit Exchange often set the standard for what wealthy women wore in the 18th and 19th Centuries. We deal with clothes that are tailored carefully by our expert tailors. The nobility and wealthy bourgeois once wore them.
  4. Museu Nacional do Teatro e da Dança

    – This Museum deals with Portuguese Theatre and Dance and includes around 260,000 pieces. It pays tribute to its prominent figures and the most celebrated productions. The Museum is located in the modernized wing of the Palace, which opened in 1985.
  5. Museu da Cidade

    – Unlike the outside, the inside of this Palace is opulent, with multiple chandeliers and teal furniture. On both sides of the door, a pair of pilasters flank it on either side. A charming formal garden with trimmed hedges sits in front.
  6. Estádio José Alvalade

    – F.C. Sporting of Lisbon may not be as successful as Benfica or Porto, but they still have 18 Primeira Liga victories and the 2015 Cup. Some of Portugal’s greats have put on their iconic green and white strips like Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo.
  7. Museu Bordalo Pinheiro

    – Close to the stadium in Odivelas, you can find a museum that celebrates Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. This 19th-century artist is loved for his ceramics that depict caricatures, considered by many to be Portugal’s first comic artist.
  8. Centro Colombo

Located off the main road, this huge shopping center is one of the biggest in Lisbon and is a tourist attraction. That may be partly due to their design. It’s reminiscent of the Age of Discovery. In this period, Portuguese expeditions in the 15th and 16th centuries gave Portugal an upper hand in world affairs.
  9. Museu da Música

    – The National Music Museum near Portugal’s Colombo Center is an excellent attraction for those interested in music, furniture, and theatre costumes. Its collection of instruments might be one of the largest in Europe, with more on display than ever before.
  10. Calouste Gulbenkian Museum

    – Calouste Gulbenkian was a brilliant entrepreneurial and philanthropic character, coming from Armenian-British origins and becoming fabulously successful when he helped pioneer Oil exploitation in the Middle East. His most luxurious possessions are treasures from Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome arranged chronologically.
  11. Nossa Senhora Rosario de Fatima

    – The Art Deco Church was the most ostentatious structure. At one time, it symbolized modernity and progress in the broadest sense. In the early 20th Century, new developments came about: wide avenues cutting through the former countryside and edged with bold new buildings. They were so revolutionary that they earned their name: “Haussmannization.”
  12. Campo Pequeno

Built from red brick at the start of the 1890s and in Neo-Moorish style. The Cidade Velha bullfighting arena is a historic venue with roots dating back to the 1820s. The first show here took place with a special decree by King Miguel I, but nowadays, it’s not just about bullfighting; there are also live concerts or musical theatre performed.
  13. Reservatório da Mãe d’Água das Amoreiras

    – One of the best ways to explore Lisbon is to learn more about its historic water supply problems and the fantastic water-related projects completed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Mãe d’Água is the beautifully designed reservoir where the 19-kilometer-long Águas Livres Aqueduct deposits its water. The term, meaning ‘mother of water in Portuguese, originates from the idea that she nurtures and cares for them like a mother with her children.
