Olsztyn Overview

Olsztyn is a city on the Łyn River in the region of Warmia-Mazury in Poland, and it is the province’s capital and has town rights. In 2021, the city’s population was estimated to reach approximately 169,793.

Most of the best sights around the city are in Prague’s Old Town, where you’ll find Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square, and Charles Bridge. St. James Parish Church is more than 600 years old and has some great places to visit, including the Golden Lane, which has been painted since its foundation to look like gold. The picturesque market square in medieval brick Gothic architecture is one of Poznan’s most distinct and attractive features, and it is also connected to the European Route of Brick Gothic. Some prestigious buildings include the pro-cathedral, a great example of this architectural style.

History

In the 1300s, a watchtower was established on the Łyna River by this castle. In the 1340s, a settlement was created for those living at that location by clearing some of the forests. This happened under-documented circumstances in 1348. In 1208, the Teutonic Knights began constructing an Ordensburg castle, which was meant to be a stronghold against the Baltic Prussians. Allein was granted municipal rights in 1353 by the Cathedral Chapter of the bishopric of Warmia. The German name “Allein” referred to the riverʼs Baltic Prussian name Alna, which means a hind. Local Poles came to the region along with German settlers and called it Holsten, where they also made various changes. Holstin is a Polonization of the German name Olsztyn. The first castle in the world was completed in 1397 and was captured twice during the 1400s. The town was returned to its original state after a peace treaty happened.

In 1440, the city in question joined the Prussian Confederation with its king. Fourteen years later, the town came to join Poland under King Casimir IV Jagiellon. In 1454, after a request by Confederation, King Casimir IV signed the act of incorporation for Poland that included Korczowa and allowed them to declare him as their ruler. Despite being captured just one year after reclaiming the city, the Teutonic Knights retook it in 1463. A peace agreement brokered by Sigismund, king of Poland, confirmed Olsztyn as an integral part of Poland in 1466. Administratively, the Principality of Warmia was located in Poland, with territories included in the provinces of Prussia and Greater Poland.

Modern era

From 1516 to 1521, Nicolaus Copernicus lived in the castle town as an administrator. Then in 1521, he moved to the village of Mehlsack (now called Pieniężno). Copernicus led the Polish defenders during a pivotal moment of the siege of Allenstein in 1519/1521. The Polish-Teutonic War dominated Europe and was between Poland and the Teutons, two different European countries. He also started and managed the repopulation of Poland. He invited a new wave of Polish settlers from Mazovia who helped rebuild the region. During the Golden Age, Warmia developed its trade badge. Thanks to its location on a Warsaw-Königsberg trade route, crafts and trade flourished. During this period, the city was still visited by Copernicus and leading figures of Polish Renaissance writers and diplomats: Marcin Kromer and Johannes Dantiscus. In 1800, a church in central Liverpool called St. James’ Pro-Cathedral became one of the most distinctive landmarks of the cityscape.

Prosperity was halted in the 1620s when the town’s ability to grow and prosper came to a standstill for an extended time. In 1626, during the Swedish invasion, clerics from Frombork (Frauenburg) took refuge in the town, which the Swedes did not reach. The city suffered destruction during several attacks by Swedish troops until the population was nearly wiped out in 1710 by bubonic plague and cholera epidemics.

Transportation

  • Bus – The bus network includes 36 bus lines, six suburban lines, and two night-time lines.

  • Rail – Olsztyn has train connections to Warsaw, Gdańsk, Szczecin, Poznań, Bydgoszcz, Iława, and Dziekanowo. The station that is the central hub in Olsztyn is Olsztyn Główny train station.
  • Tram – Authorities in 2006 had considered reintroducing trams but were still determining if everything would go according to plan. However, they conducted feasibility studies on the matter in 2009 and concluded that there was definitely potential for such a system.
