Oostende Overview

The Belgian city of Ostend is located on the coast, and long beaches and a promenade make it a popular tourist destination. Mercator, a 3-masted ship built in the 1930s, is now a floating museum in the marina. From the 1830s to the present, Belgian art has been displayed at Mu.ZEE. Featuring soaring spires and stained-glass windows, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is a neo-Gothic structure. In 1811, Fort Napoleon was built near the harbor as a five-sided fortification.

History

Ostend was a small village in the early Middle Ages located on an island (called Testerep initially) between the North Sea and a beach lake. Villagers were allowed to hold markets and build market halls in 1265 when the village became a “town.”

Inhabitants relied heavily on fishing for their income. As a result of the power of the water, the North Sea coastline has always been somewhat unstable. A new Ostend was built behind large dikes and further away from the always-threatening sea in 1395.

In addition to offering significant advantages for Ostend as a harbor, its location on the North Sea coast was a source of trouble for the city. The town was often taken, ravaged, ransacked, and destroyed by conquering armies. The Dutch rebels, the Gueuzen, seized control of the town. During the Siege of Ostend, 1601 to 1604, where the Spanish attacked the unassailable and the Dutch defended the indefensible, more than 80,000 people died or were wounded, making it the single bloodiest battle of the Eighty Years’ War. Several years later, negotiations led to a truce following this shocking event. As a result of the breakdown of the ceasefire, it became a Dunkirker base.

Climate

Ostend enjoys a maritime temperate climate, influenced by North Sea winds, making summers more relaxed than in inland Europe. It is rare to experience an average temperature below zero for 24 hours in a row. On climate maps, Ostend has a marine west coast climate, abbreviated “Cfb” according to the Köppen Climate Classification system.

Transport

The Ostend-Bruges International Airport, located 5 km (3 miles) from Ostend, is primarily a freight airport but also offers passenger flights to holiday destinations in Southern Europe and Turkey. Ostend is the headquarters of TUI fly Belgium, and on the grounds of Ostend Airport are the offices of TAAG Angola Airlines.

With frequent InterCity trains serving Brugge, Gent-Sint-Pieters, Brussels South, and Liège-Guillemins on Belgian railway line 50A, Ostend railway station is a central hub on the Belgian railway network. In the north, the Coast Tram connects Ostend with Knokke-Heist, while in the south, it connects Ostend with the city of De Panne.

With the failure of TransEuropa Ferries in 2013, Ostend’s ferry routes to Dover and Ramsgate were no longer available.

Is Ostend worth visiting?

As a seaside resort, Ostend is worth visiting if you like bars, shops, and attractions. It is like a Belgian Blackpool, especially with the Coastal Tram, which makes exploring other coastal towns easy.

What is Ostend, Belgium, known for?

The Royal Galleries of Ostend, the pier, and fine-sand beaches are all part of Ostend’s seaside esplanade. Especially during July and August, Ostend sees many day-trippers heading to the beaches.

Best Things to Do in Ostend (Belgium)

Atlantic Wall Museum

The Atlantikwall, a substantial coastal defense built by the Germans during the Second World War, is preserved in Ostend’s Riverside neighborhood.

Beach of Ostend

There are six different sections to the beach, the longest of which is the Groot Strand, which is two kilometers long. A wide beach club, showers, a first aid station, and other amenities are available as you go west.

 Zeilschip Mercator

The sleek 78.5-meter, three-master sailboat, which serves as a floating museum and landmark in front of Ostend’s city hall, is permanently moored there.

Kusttram (Coast Tram)

Operating between Ostend and Nieuwpoort since 1885, the tramline serves almost the entire Belgian coast. The Kusttram is now nearly 70 kilometers long and is the longest tramline in the world and one of the few remaining interurban tramways.

Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk

This magnificent neo-Gothic church on the namesake square appears much older than it is.

Koninklijke Gaanderijen (Royal Galleries)

West of the Albert I-Promenade, the seafront walkway becomes the Koning Boudewijnpromenade. Designed to protect bourgeois and aristocratic visitors from the elements as they walk to and from the waterfront’s amenities, it is paved with geometric mosaics.

Fort Napoleon

This polygonal Napoleonic-era fort was built in 1811 on the dunes east of the harbor. During the War of the Fifth Coalition of 1809, Napoleon expected a seaborne attack from the United Kingdom to help the Austrian Empire reclaim territory.

ANNO 1465 Raversyde

A museum and archaeological site at the former Medieval fishing village of Walraversijde keeps you in Raversyde a little longer. Neolithic roots run deep in this settlement on an island that was once an island.

Leopoldpark

Located a few blocks from the waterfront, this English park was landscaped in 1860 on the site of the old city fortifications. Located around a pond, Leopoldpark is a peaceful place to escape the breeze for a while, with a few monuments to explore.

Mu.ZEE

In 1885, the city received an art collection as a gift that eventually found a permanent home in 1946 in a Modernist former department store. Mu.ZEE exhibits Belgian art from the 19th century to the present, including works by luminaries like Luc Tuymans, Jan Fabre, René Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Karel Appel, and Panamarenko.
