Orihuela Overview
At the foot of the Sierra de Orihuela mountains in Alicante, Spain, Orihuela is a city and municipality. During the first quarter of 2013, Orihuela had a population of 33,943. There are 92,000 inhabitants in the town of 367.19 km2, which stretches down to the Mediterranean coast, west of Torrevieja. It includes the city of Orihuela and the coastal tourist development hub (urbanization turistica) of Dehesa de Campoamor, with 33,277 inhabitants (2013).
There is a river called Segura that runs through Orihuela. Initially called Orcelis, the city was later renamed Aurariola by the Romans.
History
As a capital of a province and even a kingdom, Orihuela is the capital of the “Vega Baja del Segura” (natural region of the Segura River). On 11 September 1437, the city became the first city of the province of Alicante.
Aurariola, after which it was named, was the capital of the Visigothic province of Aurariola in 576. Teodomiro, a military man and Count, proclaimed himself King of Tudmir in 713 (5 April).
In the first Viking wave across the Mediterranean, the Vikings attacked the city at the end of the 9th century (858-861).
The Kingdom of Tudmir became dependent under Umayyad control in 825, and its capital was moved to Murcia. Cordova was the Emirate that took over the Kingdom of Tudmir in 910.
The principality of Murcia was created in 1053 as part of the Kingdom of Denia. Murcia became independent from Denia in 1086. The area passed to the Kingdom of Murcia in 1212.
As of 1304, Orihuela was considered to be on the border between Castile and Aragón. It passed to the kingdom of Valencia in 1366.
It was declared a city in 1437, and in 1507, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, made it the capital of the province of Orihuela. The region of Alicante was formed in 1737 when Alicante, Elche, Monforte, Jijona, Villajoyosa, Agost, Busot, San Juan, or Mutxamel separated from Orihuela.
Alicante was the province that contained Orihuela in 1799. As part of the Department of Segura, Orihuela was made part of Napoleon’s Department of Segura in 1810. Murcia became the province of Orihuela in 1822 and part of the province of Alicante in 1833. As far back as 1920, nationalistic movements referred to Orihuela as “Murcia’s country.”
Several research studies conducted between 1988 and 2006 by the universities of Andalusia, Castile, and Murcia revealed that Orihuela is culturally more Murcian than Valencian regarding phonetics, lexicon, architecture, agriculture, folklore, musical celebrations, instruments, language, burial customs, and gastronomy.
Recently, there has been growing support for the “independence” of Orihuela Costa (Dehesa de Campoamor) from Orihuela. Many foreign-born residents of Orihuela Costa believe that the local government unfairly treats them. The Costa’s share in the 2010-2014 municipal budget was 6x less than the city’s, or 4,2% of the 295 million € budget, even though it creates around 30% of the city’s tax revenue.
City and suburbs
At the beginning of 2013, there were 92,000 inhabitants in the municipality, but only 33,943 lived in Orihuela. Located on the coast, more than 20 km from Orihuela, Dehesa de Campoamor, also known as Orihuela Costa, is another prominent locality. At the beginning of 2013, it had 33,277 residents.
Around 59.6% of the local population is Spanish; almost 20% is British, followed by Irish, Bulgarians, and Moroccans, with approximately 3% each. There are currently 106 different nationalities living in Orihuela.
Orihuela is the metropolitan area of Vega Baja del Segura. The eleven municipalities are Benejúzar, Benferri, Beniel, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Cox, Jacarilla, Rafal, Redován, and Santomera. At the beginning of 2006, it had 151,358 residents and 510,3 square kilometers of land.
Economy
The crops grown in Orihuela include lemons, oranges, almonds, olives, palm trees, pomegranates, cotton, hemp, and vegetables. In addition to silk and wool, preserved foods played a significant economic role. The tourism industry has been Orihuela’s main engine of growth in the 21st century, and it is one of the most critical sectors of the economy.
Climate
Winters in Orihuela are long, cold, and partly cloudy, and summers are hot, humid, and mostly clear. Most of the year, the temperature ranges between 41°F and 90°F, rarely falling below 33°F or rising above 95°F. Mid-June to early September is the best time to visit Orihuela for hot-weather activities.
