Osnabrück is a city in northwest Germany. The town hall was the site of the 1648 Peace of Westphalia where agreements were made that ended the 30 Years’ War. The town square, with its gabled houses and 13th-century Gothic church, sits beside it. The Felix Nussbaum House showcases an impressive collection of works by the local surrealist painter. It also plays host to summer concert performances at Osnabrück Castle squares.
Osnabrück is well known for its industry with many companies located in the city and its surrounding area. Despite the heavy bombing during World War II, Osnabrück was rebuilt and the reconstruction designs were loyal to the old medieval parts of the town. It was also once home to the largest movie theater in Europe. Osnabruck has a historically, culturally, and linguistically important presence. It has more than 22,000 students from all over the world studying at the University and the University of Applied Sciences. They study law, medicine, pharmacy, business administration, and engineering as well as other languages such as Arabic or Turkish.
It is disputed as to what the origin of the name Osnabrueck is. Osna- is a prefix that can be translated to “near”, “in” or “close”. If taken literally, it would suggest that Osozna is near something. However, if we take the prefix in its more general meaning, we could apply it to several different words in other languages. The name of today’s city is supposedly a corruption of “Oxen Bridge,” which is etymologically and historically impossible. This name was documented in 1247 and 13th-century sources show that it wasn’t named for the town at all. However, others argue that it comes from the name of the Hase River, which is derived from Asen (Æsir), giving Osnabrück the meaning “bridge to the gods”. Before Tacitus came to call people living near it Chasuarii. The Teutoburg Forest is a large forest located in western Germany. It’s culturally important to Germans, but new research suggests that until the 19th century it wasn’t known as the Teutoburg Forest–instead, it was known as the Osning. It’s easy for you to know where a person is from by the way they pronounce the city’s name. Most locals stress the last syllable, while those from elsewhere tend to stress the first one. Osnabrück sounds like this in English.
The city of Osnabruck was founded by Charlemagne and was originally a marketplace. It became the seat of the Prince-Bishopric of Osnabruck sometime before 803. Osnabrück is the oldest bishopric in Lower Saxony. The exact date of its foundation is uncertain, but it was likely founded during the Middle Ages.
Some historians say that Charlemagne founded the oldest Gymnasium on October 20, 804, whereas other historians think it could be a forgery- but regardless of its date, this is a great example of medieval education.
In 889 the town was granted merchant, customs, and coinage privileges by King Arnulf of Carinthia. In 1147 it became known as “Osnabrück,” which is where records first refer to it. A decade later, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa granted the town fortification privileges. The main towers from the original fortifications of Osnabrück are still visible. The city became a member of the Hanseatic League in the 12th century, as well as a member of the Westphalian Federation of Cities.
Osnabruck, one of Germany’s major industrial cities in the later Middle Ages had a history recorded by Albert Suho. This chronicle was particularly important to the community because of his contributions to the economic, political, and religious issues of the town.
There was an interesting period during the Protestant Reformation in Osnabrück when people were extremely unhappy. They also went through a terrible war (the Thirty Years War), and they also found themselves hunted down for being witches. During the rule of Mayor Hammacher, 1565-1588, 276 women were executed. 163 of these were burned as alleged witches. These executions are believed to have stemmed from a man named Abiam Marchand who was an expert at using magic tricks in public settings.
The first Lutheran services were held in Osnabrück in 1543. Over the next century, Lutheranism expanded in the city and several Protestant bishops were elected. However, the Catholic churches continued to operate, and the city never became completely Protestant-free. In 1624, the Thirty Years’ War began. The Bishop of Salzburg was elected in 1625, and the city was occupied by troops of the Catholic League in 1628. The Gymnasium Carolinum was upgraded to a Jesuit university in 1632. A year after it opened, the university was closed when Swedish troops took the city back.
Peace negotiations took place in Osnabrück and the nearby city of Münster from 1643 to 1648. The Treaty of Westphalia, which is often referred to as the Peace of Osnabrück and Münster, was signed in 1648. The prince-bishopric, of which some happened to be Catholics and some Lutherans, would alternately be governed by a Catholic bishop and a Lutheran one, as the succession belonging to Descendants from Top Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg (prioritizing). In 1667, prince-bishop Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, built the new baroque palace. His son, George I of Great Britain, died in the palace in 1727. The palace would become the birthplace of Prince William later turned into Kensington Palace where he passed away.
Local contemporary historian and social critic Justus Möser wrote a document that had an influential impact on Germany. It is called the Osnabrücker Geschichte, which is highly informative and even included many provisions for establishing governments. Following the Seven Years’ War, their population fell below 6,000., However, they saw an economic revival with the linen and tobacco industries that helped to cause a rise again from the 1780s onwards.
