The earliest evidence of human habitation dates back to the Stone Age (ca 4000 BC). The Lengyel and Globular Amphora cultures were among the nomadic tribes then. From the Danube River region, they came here.

Early documents describing the Ostrowiec village that gave rise to modern Ostrowiec Witokrzyski date from the 14th century. In those days, the town was called Ostrow, situated on the right bank of the Kamienna. An early 16th-century nobleman named Kacper Maciejewski attempted to establish this town but was unsuccessful. As part of the Ostrowiec district, Denków (also known as Wielki Michów) received a town charter in 1564. There was a remote town called Denków, located in the Sandomierz County of the Sandomierz Voivodeship of the Polish Crown’s Lesser Poland Province.

As part of the Sandomierz Voivodeship, Rawa was founded in 1597 by Jakub Gawroski of Rawa coat of arms near the Kamienna River in the Vistula basin. In 1613, it was granted town privileges. In the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, it was owned by Janusz Ostrogski, a statesman and one of the wealthiest magnates. Several Polish aristocratic families owned it later: the Tarnowski family, Czartoryski family, Lubomirski family, Radziwiłł family, Zasławski family, Sanguszko family, Wielopolski family, Dobrzański family, Łubieński family.

In the postwar period, Ostrowiec continued to develop. Several villages were annexed as part of the 1954 annexation, including Denków, formerly a town. During the 1970s, a new metallurgical plant was built. The metallurgical industry experienced a big crisis in the 1990s, and the Spanish CELSA Group purchased the steel plant then.
