Ourense Overview
It is located in the autonomous community of Galicia, in the northwestern part of Spain, and is the capital of the province of Ourense. Located on the Camino Sanabrés path of the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago), it is crossed by the Miño, Barbaña, Loña, and Barbañica rivers. The city is also called A Cidade das Burgas (in Galician) due to its hot springs, one of Europe’s most famous thermal centers.
Population
With 105,233 residents (2019), it is the third largest city of Galicia and accounts for 34.2% of the province’s population. More than 140,000 people are living in its metropolitan area.
There were 14,171 foreigners living in the city in 2019, representing 13.5% of the total population. Portugal (31.8%), Venezuela (11.2%), and Romania (7.9%) are the main nationalities.
According to 2018 data, 32.3% of the population speaks Galician, 17.1% speaks Spanish, and the rest use both languages interchangeably.
History
Hot springs called Burgas in this area have been around since the Roman era, and the remains of these can still be seen today. The place also needed to be fortified to protect one of the most accessible crossings of the Miño River. During the 5th, 6th, and 7th centuries, Ourense was a part of the Suebi (Suevi) kingdom and was destroyed by the Moors in 716. In about 877, Alfonso III of Asturias rebuilt it. As a result of Norse invasions and attacks from the Arab warlord Al-Mansur, the city again fell into ruin. Sancho II and his sister Doa Elvira were the only ones who resettled the town during the 11th century. It wasn’t until the 12th century that Ourense became an important center of services that the definitive urban impulse arrived. Adding new parks, bridges, fountains, and geothermal springs has been one of the city’s recent efforts to improve its appearance.
Geography
Auria is an ancient city located in the south-central part of Galicia, at an elevation of 128 meters above sea level, on both banks of the Mio River.
It is crossed by four rivers: Miño (the main river), Barbaña, Loña, and Barbañica. An industrial suburb west of the city with a railroad station is divided from the main town by the most significant river. In addition to the famous Roman bridge, Ponte Vella, now closed to vehicle traffic, three highways and one railroad bridge cross the river. A forest mainly composed of oaks and pines surrounds the town.
Climate
The Köppen climate classification for Ourense is Csa, which means it has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot, with daytime temperatures around 30 °C (86 °F), while winters are wet, with daytime highs around 12 °C (54 °F) and lows just above freezing. In August 2018, Ourense recorded its then hottest day on record at 42.7 °C (108.9 °F); on 14th July 2022, it reached 44.1 °C (111.4 °F). Since the climate of Galicia is generally described as transitional oceanic or warm-summer Mediterranean (Köppen climate classification: Csb), it is a microclimate generated by the unique orography of Ourense.
Economy
In the city of Ourense, the service sector dominates the economy. The city is home to the province’s most extensive shopping and leisure facilities, administrative services (the Xunta delegation, provincial and central government offices), educational services (the University of Vigo campus), and a hospital complex. Additionally, the construction industry plays a significant role. The city’s headquarters are home to Copasa, one of Galicia’s biggest construction companies.

There is a long and turbulent history of association football in the town. A merger of two local clubs led to UD Orensana in 1935, and CD Ourense took its place in 1952 after being dissolved. As a result of financial difficulties, they were disbanded in 2014. It changed its name to Ourense C.F. in 2014 after being founded in 1977 as Ponte Ourense Club de Football.
