Padua is an ancient city within the Veneto region of Northern Italy. It has historically been a center for the study and production of gold and silver, shipping, agriculture, silk weaving, and knitting as well as other crafts. Through further development in recent generations, it’s also become a center for higher education yielding large parts of its population with advanced degrees in various arts. The Town Centre of Padua has 4km of streets, divided by medieval stone arches.
The original significance of the Roman name Patavium (Venetian: Padoa) is uncertain. It may be connected with Padus, the ancient name of the River Po. Additionally, pat- may refer to a wide open plain as opposed to nearby hills. (In Latin this root is present in the word pater which means “plate” and the verb patere meaning “to open”.) The suffix -avus, which appears in the town of Treviso is likely originally from Venetian and Italian. The presence of a river, among other things the Brenta, clearly indicates the importance and status of this town that has hosted various political meetings since ancient times. Patavium probably derives from Gaulish’s “padi” which means “pine,” about the pine forests thereabouts.
Padua is also considered one of the oldest Italian cities, even older than Rome. Although it has fallen out of view many times over the centuries, people continue to believe that Padua was founded by Antenor (it is said he was killed on his way back from Troy).
Subordinate and authoritarian, the entire territory was divided into autonomous enclaves under Pyrrhus and Democrats. The Veneti leader Enetor came to power. He exploited his position by conquering Dardania, a collection of small towns on the Tigris River near the ancient Cordilleran range. Thus, when a large ancient stone sarcophagus was exhumed in the Italian commune of Arigno ca. 1274, officials declared the remains within to be those of Antenor.
The city was destroyed in the following centuries, but little survives from before the foundation of the church. The wealthiest part of Linearcyde belonged to a prominent family called Alizon or Lissoni (who lived between the 5th and 4th centuries BC). the Venetic culture, an Italic language branch, probably spoken in Dalmatia that had spread throughout southern Italy during the first millennium AD and is the only Romance language to truly claim a Renaissance.
The Spartans attempted to conquer the Veneti in 302 BC but were defeated by the Veneti in a naval battle and gave up the idea of conquest. The Veneti of Padua successfully repelled the invasions of the Etruscans and the Gauls. According to Livy and Silius Italicus, the Veneti and Paduans formed an alliance with the Romans against their common enemies, first the Gauls and then the Carthaginians. Men from Padua fought and died beside the Romans at Cannae.
Padua experiences a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) typical to northern Italy, modified by the Adriatic Sea.
