Castile and León is the autonomous community that includes Palencia, a city in Spain. As the capital and most populated municipality of Palencia, it is the largest municipality in the region.
This city lies on the left bank of the Carrión River northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, on the northern half of the Inner Plateau.
Together with Valladolid and Burgos, Palencia forms part of a regional economic axis. According to the 2017 census, the municipality has 78,892 residents.
It is located near the confluence of the Carrión and Pisuerga rivers, which flow through Palencia, creating four islets, Dos Aguas and Sotillo being the largest. Palencia is located along the Spanish plateau, or Meseta Central, in the middle of the Carrión river valley, near the confluence of the Carrión and Pisuerga rivers. Approximately 190 kilometers between Palencia and Madrid and 40 kilometers between Palencia and Valladolid, the capital of Castile and León.
In its northeast area, the city is surrounded by two hills. The closest statue is the 30-meter-tall Cristo del Otero, the fourth-tallest Christ statue in the world.
Located 6 km above Palencia on a plateau known as the “Monte el Viejo” (“Old Mount”), Palencia has an extensive forest of 1,438 hectares. Locals enjoy this park as an amusement area.
A canal runs close to the city, the Canal de Castilla.
A village of 14 km away, Paredes de Monte, is part of Palencia’s municipality.
Due to its altitude (749 m) and isolation from maritime influences, Palencia has a Continental Mediterranean climate with cool winters and sometimes snow. Minimum temperatures are usually below 0 °C (32 °F), and there is a lot of fog because of the Carrion River. The summers are hot, with temperatures exceeding 30 °C (86 °F) in July and rarely exceeding 38 °C (99 °F). Nightly temperatures are more relaxed in Palencia because of its altitude, which results in a lower average temperature in the summer. Despite moderate precipitation levels (except in July and August), precipitation can be observed throughout the year. The driest seasons are summer and winter, while the wettest seasons are autumn and spring.
Light rains and heavy thunderstorms characterize the winter, while the summer is characterized by infrequent rain and heavy thunderstorms.
There are only a few days of snowfall each year in December, January, and February; snowfall can also occur in November or March.
In Strabo and Ptolemy, Pallantia is mentioned as a fortified Celtiberian settlement. The name is possibly derived from the Indo-European root pala (“plain”). Strabo wrongly assigns it to the Arevaci when he refers to it as the chief town of the Vaccaei. In the 2nd century B.C., the Romans starved the city into submission and incorporated it into Hispania Tarraconensis under the jurisdiction of Colonia Clunia Sulpicia (modern Clunia). Although the Roman garrison city had an active mint, it was insignificant compared to the Roman villas of Late Antiquity nearby. The remains of Roman villas have been discovered at La Olmeda and at Quintanilla de la Cueza, where fragments of mosaic floors have been found. During the Visigothic wars against the Suevi (457) in the 5th-century Galician chronicler Idatius, Palencia’s power center lay far to the east, in Aquitania, during the reign of Theodoric II. Although the Visigoths conquered the territory, they retained the Roman rural villa system when establishing the Campos Góticos.
From 78,800 to 81,552 residents, Palencia’s population has increased in the last ten years. Historically, the town has been a center for rural immigrant help to industrial development, particularly during the 1950s and 1970s. Nonetheless, due to youth emigration to larger urban centers such as Valladolid, Madrid, or Barcelona, it has a population with a higher percentage of retirees than the average.
Founded in 1208 by Alfonso VIII, the studium generale of Palencia was the first University in Spain. Saint Dominic, the founder of the Dominican Catholic Order, and 13th-century poet Gonzalo de Berceo studied at the University briefly. The University of Salamanca and the University of Valladolid attracted Palencia’s teachers, but the Bishop of Palencia’s significant religious orders remained in Palencia.
Palencia is known for its lechazo (suckling lamb), which is locally produced. A slow-roasted suckling lamb is traditionally served with salad and roasted in a wooden oven. A traditional dish called “Menestra de Verduras” combines vegetables cooked with chopped Spanish ham, onion, garlic, and spices.
In addition to lettuce, leeks, wild mushrooms, peppers, asparagus, endives, and beans, Palencia offers a wide selection of other vegetables. White beans and lentils are delicious when cooked with chorizo in hot dishes.
