Palma Overview

As the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands, Palma is also known as Palma de Mallorca (officially between 1983 and 1988, 2006–08, and 2012–16). It is located on Mallorca’s south coast, in the Bay of Palma. Despite being far from Palma proper, the Cabrera Archipelago is administratively considered part of the municipality. Twenty-nine million passengers pass through Palma Airport each year as of 2018.

History

On top of the ruins of a Talaiotic settlement, Palma was founded as a Roman camp. It was subjected to several Vandal raids during the fall of the Western Roman Empire, then recaptured by the Byzantine Empire, then colonized by the Moors (who called it Medina Mayurqa), and finally, by James I of Aragon, in the 13th century.

After the Roman conquest of Mallorca, the city was loosely incorporated into the Tarraconensis province. Two new towns were founded: Palma on the south of the island and Pollentia on the northeast. As Pollentia served Roman cities on the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, Palma served destinations in Africa, such as Carthage, and Hispania, such as Saguntum, Gades, and Carthago Nova. There are no significant archaeological remains from this period in Palma today, but occasionally archaeological finds are found in excavations in the city center. At Can Bordils, the Municipal Archive, and the Maimó ben Faraig Center, you can see remains of the Roman Wall.

Due to the lack of documents, it is difficult to understand the period between the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the Muslim conquest. Still, mosaics found in the oldest parts of the cathedral, once part of a paleo-Christian temple, indicate a Byzantine presence in the city during the early medieval period.

Geography

Mallorca, a western Mediterranean island of the Balearic Islands archipelago, has Palma as its largest city and seaport. The town has 21.355 square kilometers (8.245 square miles) of land, located at an altitude of 13 meters (43 feet).

Palma’s city center is north of the homonymous bay (Badia de Palma in local Catalan). There is a flat fertile plain known as Es Pla that extends eastwards. To the north and west, the city borders the Serra de Tramuntana, the island’s primary mountain range and a Unesco World Heritage site.

Climate

It has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa) with an average annual temperature of 18.2 °C (65 °F).

During January, the coldest month, the average high temperature is 15.4 °C (60 °F), and the average low is 8.3 °C (47 °F). The average high temperature in August is 29.8 °C (86 °F), while the average low is 22.5 °C (73 °F). It is the wettest season in autumn, with heavy rainfall and occasional storms. Every year, there are approximately 2800 hours of sunshine. Since the city has a maritime influence, its winters are mild, and its summers are hot but not hot and humid. Despite being on an island, Mallorca can still build up and sustain heat because the surrounding continental landmasses can warm up the offshore sea surface temperatures. Due to the seawater reaching its peak temperature long after the summer solstice, there is a vast seasonal lag during late summer. Due to the influence of the sea, extreme temperatures are rare. In Mallorca, only one low temperature below freezing has ever been recorded, 0.1 °C (32 °F) in February 2012, and the summer temperature has never exceeded 38 °C (100 °F) since temperature records started in 1978. From late April to early November, the beach weather in Mallorca lasts 6–7 months, with an average sea temperature of 19.5°C (67°F).

Population

As of the 2009 census, Palma proper had 401,270 residents, while the entire urban area had 550,000 residents, making it Spain’s twelfth-largest metropolitan area. During the first quarter of 2019, the city’s population reached 416,065. Almost half a million people live in Palma, the capital of Mallorca.

In 2017, more than 60,000 foreigners registered with the town hall in Palma. The foreign population declined by 832 from 2016 to 2017, the highest decline among the Balearic islands.

Sports

On the island, football is the most popular sport, with Real Mallorca, based in Palma, playing at the Estadi de Son Moix and CD Atlético Baleares playing in Segunda División B.

Among the most popular sports is basketball. CBB San Augustin plays its home games at the Palau Municipal d’Esports Son Moix, which has a capacity of 5,076.

With its maritime location, Palma has a strong presence in all sea sports. Among the most important sporting events in the city is the Ciutat de Palma Prizes.

Mallorca is a popular destination for road cyclists. Professional cyclists compete in the Vuelta a Mallorca in February, which involves a circuit race around Palma’s streets on the first day. Palma Arena, a multi-platinum venue with a velodrome, is also located here. As part of the event, the arena also hosted a tennis tournament called Battle of Surfaces.

A five-day culture, sport, and inclusivity festival took place in June 2016 in Palma as part of the First World Company Sports Games. Locals and tourists were encouraged to unite in the city through World Federation Company Sport. Offering packages, including accommodations close to the events and additional tourism information for future events, made it a prominent business venture.

What is Palma Spain known for?

The city has a charming historical quarter and a sun and beach tourism industry. Cathedral, Almudaina Palace, Lonja fish market, and Plaza Mayor are some sites worth exploring. Fishing boats, pine forests, and palm trees surround the most beautiful monuments.
