Panevezys Overview
Panevėžys is one of the largest cities in Lithuania, with 113,653 inhabitants. As of 2011, it had an area of 52 square kilometers (20 sq mi). According to Eurostat, Panevėžys’ functional urban area, which extends beyond the city limits and includes suburbs, has 127,471 residents (as of 2017).
Coat of arms
Historical documents show that the first seal of the city of Panevėžys appeared in 1701 when an act on civil rights was issued. Panevėžys did not have the right to self-government before this, so no seal likely existed before 1701. All the predicates for the establishment of self-government arose during the period of the Four-year Seimas. In 1791–1792, most of the county centers which previously lacked governmental powers and coat of arms established them.
The coat of arms for Panevėžys, as well as in other areas in Lithuania, has been changed and modified many times over the last 200 years. There are currently 3 types of Panevėžys city seals, the use of which dates back to the early 19th century. The first machine was created in 1801. The second appeared in 1812. The third was used from 1814 to 1817. There is no doubt that all three seals under the double-headed eagle of the Russian Empire, which should have emphasized the city’s affiliation with this state, depicted the old coat of arms of Panevėžys – a brick or stone building with three towers, later a brick gate with three towers and a powerful tower behind them with a Cyrillic letter P (П) on the roof – the first letter of the city.
Legend has it that Duke Vytautas returned to Vilnius from Samogitia in 1414 and he then found an old Lithuanian settlement. Whether this legend is true, or part of the folklore surrounding Lithuania, is not yet verified.
The story that all locals believe is that, when Anna – wife of Vytautas the Great – was having a bath in the Nevėžis river and her servant saw a crayfish (a Lithuanian word for it is “Vėžys”) which startled her. This story is quite well-known among people from this area.
Geography
Panevezys is a city that is located at the intersection of two major highways and two Baltic capitals. International trade regulations allow it a head start in trading goods and services. The city’s location gives it a solid economic foundation to build from. The city is connected with Latvia and Lithuania by regular, standard-gauge trains, as well as with other cities in the region by narrow-gauge commuter trains. This railway has been preserved as a historic landmark and is a popular tourist attraction. 3.73 mi (6 km) east of Panevėžys, the Panevėžys Air Base is located.
Climate
Panevežys enjoys an average temperature of 20 60°F in the summer, it can also get quite cold during winter. It rarely rises above 80 °F and drops below zero Fahrenheit. The best time to visit Panevėžys for outdoor activities is from late June to late August.
Religion
According to the latest census, there are over 250.000 Catholics in Panevėžys County which account for 70% of its residents. 21,667 people in the census did not specify their religion of interest, 16,138 irreligious people, and 1,228 belong to unspecified religious groups.
Culture
The museum has collected plenty of historical and cultural pieces, which are organized into a variety of exhibitions year-round. Every few months the gallery also hosts related performances and discussions that explore various cultures and topics. We have a total of 30 photography exhibitions every year and 10 photo artists who have held their international one-person exhibitions and won some prizes!
Since 1989, Panevėžys has been organizing International Ceramics Symposia and the collection size is by far the largest in the Baltic countries. New collections are added every year. The Chamber Orchestra, Women’s Choir “Golden Oriole” (Lithuanian: Volungė), and Music Ensemble “Muzika” are well-known for various music projects not only in Lithuania but abroad. The Brass Orchestra Panevėžio Garsas has been playing for Lithuanian audiences and many others over the years. At 19, they won a prize at an international festival in France.
Sport
FK Ekranas: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Baltic League winners. After the club went bankrupt in 2015, FK Panevėžys became the strongest football club in Lithuania and is currently playing at the Lithuanian top level.
BC Lietkabelis, one of the original teams from the founding of LKL and has been in it since its inception, is also based in Panevėžys.
Panevėžys City Municipality
Panevėžys, the city that is located in the center of Aukštaitija, is sometimes referred to as the capital of this area. It is a separate municipality (Panevėžys City Municipality) within Panevėžys District Municipality and Panevežys County. The coat of arms with the red gate was originally adopted in 1993.
Transportation
Panevėžys had more paved streets than unpaved ones during the interwar period and was among the two leading Lithuanian cities in this regard. Even though Kaunas was larger, Panevežys had substantially more paved streets. Sidewalks were also being built along the streets. Initially, the streets were paved with plain stones but in the 1930s, central streets were already paved with hewn stones. In 1935, 26 kilometers of the city’s total roads were paved and some country roads were being built as well. The construction went on in Berčiūnai (5.4 km from 1933-1934) and Velžys (3.6 km from 1935). Unfortunately, not a single paved street in Panevežys is left. During Soviet times, all paved streets were covered in asphalt.
Panevėžys city’s very own public transit company is continuing to offer excellent and reliable service for the citizens. In total there are 44 city buses covering 136.8 km and 223 bus stops throughout the routes, giving you public transportation that’s easy to rely on!
