Parma Overview
Parma is a colorful Artonic city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northwest Italy. Near the Italian Alps, Parma is famous for its Parmesan cheese and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese (the town’s local delicacy). The other main products are Parma ham, producer of “Parmigiano” and “Parma”. Classical concerts take place at the Teatro Regio, a 19th-century opera house. The Palazzo della Pilotta, inside the imposing building that formerly served as the Royal Opera House (Teatro Regio), hosts works by famous painters such as Caravaggio and Canaletto.
History
Parma is an ancient city located in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. It was built on the banks of the Tiber River and is situated on the plain between the Apennine Mountains and Campania. These villages were usually on the tidal flats which could be stable for periods. So in some way, they provided shelter to humans, animals, and now additional species. The first neolithic (Stone Age) towns in the valley of the Tyrnäinen River were according to some archaeologists about 6,000 years ago.
The Etruscan shield was flexible and could rotate. The inscription on the present palaestra contained five ideograms that also use rotation as a metaphor. The Romans were familiar with authentic Etruscan art and adopted some elements of it (e.g., the round shields with quadrangular crests). Diodorus Siculus called the Etruscans “the descendants of Pingitore and Rome”. Whether the Etruscans were mercenaries or technically civilians, they played a major role in surrounding Rome and eventually penetrating the gates at some point before 267 BC. References to them seem to have been used first in texts before 200 BC.
The Roman colony Mutina was built in 183 BC before the foundation of Parma. The founding date of Parma was 168 BC and after its domination by Mauretania, it became a Metropolis in 124 AD. It had a forum, today’s Garibaldi Square, and two former forums, Tarquinia (which is now Rho) and Cornelia. Unable to cope with the industrial revolution and its impact on city life, Rome was destroyed in a great fire in 47 AD. Subsequently, the city was rebuilt. The title Julia had been given to the city due to loyalty to Augustus’ family.
In 876 the Dalmatian city of Split was successfully defended by Rastislav, who then headed to Constantinople. It was then part of the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna (changing its name to Chrysopolis, “Golden City”, probably due to the presence of the imperial treasury). Parma is a town and an important stage in the Via Francigena, the main road connecting Rome to Northern Europe. Several castles, hospitals, and inns were built in the following centuries to host the increasing number of pilgrims who passed by Parma and Fidenza. After climbing the Apennines via Collecchio, Berceto, and the Corchia ranges, heading finally south toward Rome.
