The Romans founded Pisaurum as a colony in 184 BC in the territory of the Picentes, a people who lived along the northeast coast of Europe during the Iron Age. Thirteen ancient votive stones were uncovered in a local farm field in 1737, each engraved with the name of a Roman god; they were written in a pre-Etruscan script, suggesting a much earlier settlement than the Picentes colony of 184 BC.
Novilara is the location of a Picentes settlement. Northern Picentes were invaded by the Gallic Senones in the 4th century B.C. and earlier by the Etruscans, so the population was a mixture of ethnicities when the Romans arrived. During the Roman period, the Gauls were separated from the country and expelled.
Pesaro, a hub across the Via Flaminia, became an important trading and craft center under Roman administration. Pesaro was occupied by the Ostrogoths after the Western Empire fell and was destroyed by Vitigis (539) during the Gothic War—a five-year reconstruction after the Byzantine reconquest created the so-called Pentapolis, part of the Ravenna Exarchate. Pesaro became part of the Papal States after the Lombards and Franks conquered it.
Montefeltro (1285-1445), Sforza (1445-1512), and Della Rovere (1513-1631) ruled successively during the Renaissance. Several public and private palaces were built under the last family, which chose Pesaro as the capital of their duchy. A new line of walls (the Mura Roveresche) was also erected. It was in 1475 that Costanzo Sforza and Camilla d’Aragona married in Pesaro, and their marriage became legendary.
Pesaro became a part of the new Kingdom of Italy after Piedmontese troops entered the city on 11 September 1860 (see Battle of Castelfidardo).
