Pescara Overview

The Adriatic Sea connects Pescara to the city of Venice. Beaches and Gabriele D’Annunzio’s birthplace make it famous. There is a museum about D’Annunzio’s life and works in his childhood home, Casa Natale di Gabriele D’Annunzio. There are exhibitions at the Museo delle Genti d’Abruzzo about regional industries such as ceramics and olive oil. At the Vittoria Colonna Museum of Modern Art, you can see works by Miró and Picasso.

Geography

Situated on the Adriatic coast at sea level, Pescara developed from ancient times around the mouth of the Aterno-Pescara River. A low sandy shore stretches unbroken in both directions along the river’s north and south banks, reaching a width of approximately 140 meters (150 yards) around a pinetum (small pine forest) to the north. On the southern Adriatic coast, the pine forest that once shaded bathers has almost disappeared, but within the Nature Reserve Pineta Dannunziana, it remains.

Population

120,420 (2017)

Climate

Our climate in Pescara lies between the Mediterranean climate (Csa) and humid subtropical climate (Cfa), with hot summers and cool winters. The city cannot be classified exclusively as Mediterranean because it receives 34 mm (1.3 inches) of precipitation during its driest month. The Mediterranean pattern is unusual because August (late summer) is wetter than February (winter), although there is a dry tendency in early summer.

History

Pescara was founded before the Roman conquest. It was established to serve the Vestini and Marrucini tribes in their trade with the Orient, a role it held for centuries. Located along the Via Claudia Valeria and the Via Tiburtina, Aternum had both a city and a river with the same name (in Greek). Among the principal buildings was the temple of Jovis Aternium. As an important port for trade with the Eastern provinces of the Empire, the town played an important role in marketing.

The Lombards destroyed it in 597 during the Middle Ages. As the patron saint of San Vittorino, Saint Cetteus served as bishop of Amiternum in Sabina (today’s city of San Vittorino) in 590, during Gregory the Great’s pontificate. According to legend, he was executed by the Lombards at Amiternum by being thrown off a bridge and tied to a stone; his body floated to Pescara.

The fishing village of Pescara was enriched with monuments and churches in 1095. During a period when armies ravaging the Kingdom of Sicily destroyed the town in 1140, Roger of Sicily conquered it. Piscaria (“abounding with fish”) appears for the first time. The fortress and the tower were built by the vicar of King Ladislaus of Naples, the vicar of Rinaldo Orsini, and Louis of Savoy.

Economy

Pescara is the largest city in the Abruzzo region and one of the top ten economic, commercial, and tourist centers on the Adriatic Sea. Pescara enjoys great popularity during summer as a seaside resort along the Adriatic coast because of its long shoreline of more than 20 kilometers (12 miles). Many breakwaters built with large rocks are situated in the sea near the waterline so that the shore would not be eroded by flooding.

A joint venture partnership between Angelini Group and Procter & Gamble and De Cecco company is based in the city.

Culture

Pescara Jazz is an annual jazz festival that takes place every July: it was the first Italian festival to dedicate itself entirely to jazz music. According to the leading international jazz magazines, it has been one of the most influential jazz festivals in Europe since 1969.

As part of the Flaiano Prizes, one of Italy’s international film festivals, the city also holds the festival annually (between June and July).

It was in Pescara that Gabriele D’Annunzio and Ennio Flaiano were born. The marchioness of Pescara was Vittoria Colonna.

University

The University of G d’Annunzio is located in Pescara and Chieti. It is home to departments such as Architecture, Economics, Business Administration, Quantitative Economics, Social and Legal Sciences, Modern Languages, Literature, and Cultures, while Chieti has departments of medicine and agriculture. There are six departments at the university, including the Departments of Medicine and Science of Aging, Experimental and Clinical Sciences, Neuroscience and Imaging, Oral Health Sciences, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Humanities Psychological Sciences, Engineering, and Geology, with about 31,257 students enrolled in 2011.

Sports

Delfino Pescara 1936, a football team from Pescara, was promoted to Serie A, the highest level of Italian football, in June 2012. In the 1980s and 1990s, Pescara Calcio spent seven seasons in Serie A after playing 38 seasons in the cadet championship.

Transport

Pescara has a wide range of public transportation services, giving it a favorable road position.

  • Motorways – Pescara-Chieti is divided by two pan-European motorways, Bologna-Taranto autostrada A14 (Italy) and Torano-Pescara autostrada A25 (Italy), linked by local bypass roads.
  • Airport – Pescara has an international airport called Abruzzo Airport (Aeroporto di Pescara), which serves the entire region.
  • Port – The Port of Pescara provides fishing, yachting, cargo docking, and commercial passenger services to Pescara.
  • Rail – There are four railway stations in Pescara, the most important of which is Pescara Centrale.
  • Bus – Several bus lines serve Pescara (operated by TUA, Società unica abruzzese di trasporto).
  • Trolleybus – A trolleybus with an automatic steering system that links the city center to the suburbs
