Pforzheim is a town in southwestern Germany. It is a gateway to the Black Forest and has been home to its jewelry and watchmaking industry since 1767. The Jewelry Museum showcases objects that are up to five thousand years old while it also hosts some of the finest items around. Geography
Pforzheim is located on the northern rim of the eastern part of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) and it falls into the area called hilly country. The town is surrounded by rivers and a small, open valley at its confluence with rivers Würm, Nagold, and Enz. Founded in the early Middle Ages, this city gained the nickname Drei-Täler Stadt from its three geographically separated valleys. It also received the nickname Gateway to the Black Forest for being located on a strategic point in southern Germany.
The city of Pforzheim belongs to the Densely Populated Area Karlsruhe/Pforzheim. Pforzheim has the functions of a regional center (Mittelzentrum) for the towns and municipalities Birkenfeld (Enz), Eisingen, Engelsbrand, Friolzheim, Heimsheim, Ispringen, Kämpfelbach, Keltern, Kieselbronn, Königsbach-Stein, Mönsheim, Neuenbürg, Neuhausen, Neulingen, Niefern-Öschelbronn, Ölbronn-Dürrn, Remchingen, Straubenhardt, Tiefenbronn, Wiernsheim, Wimsheim and Wurmberg.
Climate
The summers in Pforzheim are short, pleasant, and partly cloudy while the winters are long, very cold, and always windy. The average temperature in Pforzheim tends to run between 15 degrees F throughout an entire year, with the warmest and coldest months being late June to early September.
History
Limes, which was the Roman frontier fortification of origin, was more than twice as old as the oldest city walls. It was built in Germany in two phases, with first the Agrippina Militare (military highway) and later, in 71 AD, the Varus bridge. Due to its strategic location, Pforzheim later became a center for the timber-rafting trade, which transported timber from the Black Forest via the rivers Wuerm, Nagold, and Enz, and down the Neckar and Rhine to other markets like the Netherlands. Their timbers were also used to construct the foundations for Amsterdam, which was built in a swamp.
Various fraternities, also known as guilds, have been established in different trades for years. The fraternities of tailor’s in 1410, the fraternity of bakers on May 1422, the fraternity of weavers in 1469, the fraternity of the wine-growers in 1501, and the fraternity of a carte (a bag used for carrying laundry) were all self-governing. The fraternity members enable each other, as well as their families. They also provide membership insurance. The reason that fraternities are sometimes called ‘early health and life insurance is that they address important facets of living in today’s society, like security and protection from economic disaster.
Many factory workers were called up to contribute their labor throughout WW2, including making weaponry and major components of Nazi rockets.
On the evening of Feb. 23, 1945, Pforzheim was targeted by the Royal Air Force in one of the deadliest area bombings of World War II. About 1/4 of its population was killed, with 17,000 people not making it out alive. There is a goal of bombing Pforzheim as an important part of the war effort. The destruction that would come is huge. They bombed Pforzheim on the 11th of November 1944 and it was one in which they succeeded completely. The town was put on the target list for bombardments in 1944 because it was thought by the Allies to be producing precision instruments for use in the German war effort and as a transporter of German troops.

Religions
Baden started a religious revolution in the town of Pforzheim in 1556. They created a Protestant state which is still difficult to remove today. The town has been a part of this state for multiple centuries and even now, it remains strongly Protestant. The congregations in Pforzheim can be classified as either member of the Protestant National Church of Baden or one independent church.
It has been more than 100 years since the 19th century at the latest when Catholics settled back in Pforzheim. They are affiliated with Pforzheim Deanery of Freiburg Archdiocese.
City council
The city council of Pforzheim consists of the Lord Mayor as its president and 40 elected (part-time) councilors. The election takes place every few years, and the last one was held on 25 May 2014. The city council is the main body that represents the city’s political goals and frameworks. They have the control to determine what goes on in the government of the city. Committees will be formed to deal with specialized issues and handle public life and administration in the city. This corporation is appointed to oversee approval processes for projects and ensure fairness across the board.
The coat of arms
A shield with two red stripes encloses an emblem of a silver bar on a golden background. The rest is divided between four white-blue stripes that form the four fields that represent the colors of Pforzheim.
The inclined bar can be traced back to the 13th century as the symbol of the lords (owners) of Pforzheim, which later on also became the National Coat of Arms of Baden. However, it’s unknown what its meaning is. The coat of arms of the English royal family has been used since 1489, but its history and meaning are unclear. The current design of the coat was only developed in 1853, and it has never looked like this before.
