Piatra Neamț Overview

The city of Piatra Neamţ is located in the historical region of Western Moldavia in northeastern Romania. Romanians consider it one of the most picturesque cities because of its location in the Eastern Carpathian mountains. Piatra Neamț is the headquarters of the Nord-Est Regional Development Agency.

Etymology

Throughout the settlement’s history, the toponym Piatra (meaning ‘rock’) has always been included in its name. It is also called Piatra lui Crăciun (‘Christmas Rock,’ which corresponds to the Hungarian name of the city, “Karácson-Kő”). Additionally, it is known as Piatra, with the county name Neamţ (meaning ‘German’) added.

Geography and access

This village lies in the Bistriţa River Valley, surrounded by mountains at an average height of 345 meters (1,131.89 feet): Pietricica (530 meters), Cozla (679 meters), Cernegura (852 meters) and Bâtca Doamnei (462 meters). Near Piatra Neamţ, the river Doamna flows into the Bâtca Doamnei Reservoir, a right tributary of the Bistrița.

It is situated 350 kilometers (217 miles) north of Bucharest, in the historical region of Moldavia. A 60-kilometer (37-mile) drive south will take you to Bacău airport. In the Transylvania region, Piatra Neamț is well connected through Romanian railways trunk number 509 to Bacău (and from there by Line 500 to Bucharest), as well as by DN15 national road to Bacău (and from there by DN2 to Bucharest), Iași, Suceava, and Târgu Mureș.

History

The area around Piatra Neamţ is one of Romania’s oldest inhabited areas. Around 100,000 BCE, the earliest traces of human civilization can be found on the present territory. A remarkable number of settlements (approximately 150) on the part of Neamţ county are evidence of the Cucuteni culture, which lasted around 1000 years (3600-2600 BCE). A vital museum collection of Aeneolithic artifacts was unearthed during archaeological excavations. Furthermore, archaeologists have discovered objects from the Neolithic Period and the Bronze Age (around 1900-1700 BCE) here.

Excavations just outside the city revealed the ruins of Petrodava, a large Dacian city mentioned by Greek geographer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. There was a golden age for the whole complex between the first century BCE and the first century C.E. Bâtca Doamnei is notable for its citadel, which contains shrines similar to those in the Orăştie Mountains. Regarding the existence of a local leader, historians tend to suggest that Petrodava is the very center of the Kingdom of Dicomes. Strongholds without peers in Moldavia and Wallachia are evidence of a powerful political and military center both during the time of Burebista and before Decebalus. Piatra lui Crăciun, or Camena, a market town, was documented in the 15th century.

Pieatra lui Crăciun, Roman, and Neamţ were the first urban settlements established under Petru I Muşat (1375–1391). During the same consolidation period of the Moldavian principality east of the Carpathians, the Neamț citadel was erected. Its documentary attestation dates back to February 2, 1395. A document dated April 20, 1491, mentions the Princely Court of Piatra Neamţ, which was founded between 1468 and 1475 under Stephen the Great, the Princely Cathedral being built in 1497–1498, and the 20 m (65.62 ft) tall Bell Tower being built in 1499.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Piatra Neamț has a population of 85,055, down from the figure recorded at the 2002 census, making it the 24th largest city in Romania. 104,914 people were living in Piatra Neamț during the 2002 census.

Economy

A fertilizer plant, a pulp and paper mill, and several food processing plants are located in the city. Also found in the town are an agricultural machinery plant (Mecanica Ceahlău), a pharmaceutical plant (Plantavorel), and two paper factories.

The city’s central industrial park is in the Săvinești area, 11 km (7 mi) south of the town. There was a research institute and a chemical plant on the Săvinești platform during communist times. Today, the industrial facility belongs to the Radici Group and operates at a low capacity.

Between 7th and 11th January 2009, the first edition was held at Teatrul Tineretului and other locations. Each category is awarded during the festival’s national short film competition (all genres). Additionally, selections from international short films have won awards at major festivals worldwide. Other special programs and live concerts, workshops, and skiing are available.
