Pisa Overview

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most iconic landmarks in Italy’s Tuscany region. A 56m white-marble cylinder tilting when it was completed in 1372, it is the bell tower of the Romanesque, striped-marble Cathedral nearby in Piazza dei Miracoli. The Baptistry, whose renowned acoustics are demonstrated daily by amateur singers, and the Caposanto Monumentale cemetery are also in the piazza.

History

Pisa’s name is believed to originate from Etruscan and means ‘mouth’ since it lies at the mouth of the Arno river.

It is unknown where Pisa came from throughout history. Still, excavations in the 1980s and 1990s revealed numerous archaeological remains, including the tomb of an Etruscan prince from the fifth century B.C., which proves the city’s Etruscan origins and its role as a maritime city, suggesting that it maintained trade relationships with other Mediterranean civilizations as well.

Pisa was considered an old city by ancient Roman authors. The Alpheus coast settlers have been credited with establishing the city in the ‘Etruscan lands,’ according to Virgil’s Aeneid. According to the Virgilian commentator Servius, the Teuti founded the town 13 centuries before the common era began.

The ancient authorities attributed the invention of the naval ram to Pisa, which would have established the maritime role of the city. Due to its location between Genoa (then an isolated village) and Ostia, Pisa benefited from its position along the western coast. The town of Pisa served as a base for Roman naval expeditions against the Ligurians and Gauls. Roman law made Portus Pisanus a Roman colony in 180 BC. A municipal was established in Portus Pisanus in 89 B.C. The name Colonia Iulia obsequies were changed to Colonia Iulia obsequies by Emperor Augustus when he fortified the colony into an important port.

The shore of Pisa moved west as a result of the alluvial sediments from the Arno and the Serchio, whose mouth lies about 11 km (7 miles) north of the Arno’s. According to Strabo, a distance of 4.0 kilometers (2.5 miles) separates the city from the coast. There are currently 9.7 kilometers (6 miles) between it and the beach. Ships sailed up the Arno, however, making it a maritime city. A bath complex was built in the town during the 90s A.D.

Population

90,488 (2017)

As a result of the transitional environment, Pisa has a summer almost devoid of rain, typical of central and southern Italy, as the summer (the driest season) experiences occasional rain showers. Autumn is the peak rainy season.

  • Football – Pisa’s most popular sport is football
  • Shooting – Pisa was the first city to have its association for shooting.

  • Airport – The Pisa International Airport is located in Pisa’s San Giusto neighborhood and is known as Galileo Galilei Airport.
  • Pisamover – In March 2017, a 2 km (1.2 mi) long people mover system connecting Pisa Centrale railway station to the airport was inaugurated.
