Pistoia, Overview

The city of Pistoia is located in the Tuscan region of Italy. The Cathedral of San Zeno has a silver altar, and the octagonal Battistero di San Giovanni in Corte is situated around its central Piazza del Duomo. An 11th-century palace housing several museums are also on the Palazzo dei Vescovi square. There is a well with a marble frame in Piazza della Sala called Pozzo del Leoncino.

History

Before becoming a Roman colony in the 6th century BC, Pistoria (in Latin also known as Pistorius or Pistoriae) was a center of Gallic, Ligurian, and Etruscan settlements along the Via Cassia road: Catiline, a demagogue, and his conspirators were murdered there in 62 B.C. A bishopric existed in the city from the 5th century, and it became a royal city during the Lombardic kingdom. The city’s finest years began in 1177 when it became a free commune: it erected walls and built several public and religious buildings during this period.

In 1254, Guelph Florence conquered the Ghibelline town of Pistoia; this did not alleviate the city and led to a civil war between “Black” and “White” Guelph factions, pitting different noble families against one another. The Inferno of Dante describes Vanni Fucci, a particularly violent member of the Black faction of Pistoia, tangled up in a snake’s web while cursing God, according to which he is a beast and Pistoia his abode. Until Ormanno Tedici became Lord of the city in the 14th century, Pistoia remained a Florentine holding. Filippo’s nephew, Castruccio Castracani of Lucca, bought the town from him. 1530 marked the official annexation of the village to Florence.

Rospigliosi, owners of agricultural estates and wool merchants, were one of the city’s most famous families; they provided the church with a pope in 1667, Giulio Rospigliosi, who briefly ruled as Clement IX (1667–69).

An important Jansenist synod was convened in Pistoia in 1786.

The pistol, which began manufacturing in Pistoia in the 16th century, may have gained its name from Pistoia. Today, however, it is also notable for the extensive plant nurseries surrounding it. Additionally, Pistoia and Pescia are known for their flower markets.

The municipality of Pistoia extends into the surrounding cities of Agliana, Alto Reno Terme, Cantagallo, Lizzano in Belvedere, Marliana, Montale, Quarrata, Sambuca Pistoiese, San Marcello Piteglio, and Serravalle Pistoiese.
