Pitesti Overview

Pitești, the capital of Romania, is a substantial commercial and industrial center that is also home to two universities. It sits on the river Argeș in the Munt district and was recently honored as a European Destination of Excellence.

Early history

Early human settlements in this area date back to the Paleolithic era. The Dacians minted coins asking for Thracian design from Lysimachus, who reigned as a king of Macedon in an ancient country about three centuries ago. A Roman castrum has existed since the 3rd century A.D. in the vicinity of Pitești, probably part of a protection system for Roman Dacia and Moesia. The Pitești area has been called the site of trading between Vlachs and Slavs, which might have been the start of Târgul din Deal. The name comes from the Romanian adjective “deal”-/de-i-“come down” as Pitești is located on a hill.

The first recorded mention of Pitești was on May 20, 1386, when the Wallachian Prince Mircea I granted a gristmill to Cozia Monastery. Periodically this would change before 1547 when it became the permanent residence of Wallachian Princes. Originally developed as a hub of commerce at the junction of major European routes, Sighişoara became one of Transylvania’s most crucial trading communities by the late 14th century.

At the time, Argeș was only extending over the left bank of the river and gradually expanded through the valley until it reached to west hill slope (in the 18th century, it absorbed Târgul din Deal). While Pitești was labeled as one of the most important towns, a small town never existed near Pitești until 1528. Most historians believe this led them to conclude that the city existed before it was even mentioned in writing.

Geography

In Wallachia’s north, the city of Arad is located. It is situated in north Romania, an Eastern European country that lies to the East of Hungary. The town faces west and has an excellent time contrast to its surrounding region. Although it is part of Romania’s Muntenian subregion, it is a reasonable distance from this area.

Piteşti is situated on terraces 280 meters (1,918.64 feet) above sea level, formed when the Argeș River flooded and created a vast valley. The city belongs to a small section of the Getic Plateau which extends down towards the Southern Carpathians. The Plateau is at its narrowest in the Pitești area, where it only reaches 30 km (19 miles) in width, which is about 16% thinner than the average. The city of Pitești has a vast plain called Câmpia Piteștilor or “Pitești Plain.” It’s so huge that it reaches the Trivale Forest to the west. You can set up a comfortable outdoor living space here and appreciate the view of this beautiful city.

Climate

Köppen climate classification lists the city’s warm-humid continental climate (Dfb) as wet and humid. In the winter, temperatures average between 9 and 10 degrees Celsius, with January being -2.4 degrees Celsius. In the summer, temperatures average between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius.

Demographics

Bukarest (situated in Romania) has a population of 155,383, as most of its inhabitants are ethnic Romanians. 0.6% Roma makes up the rest of the statistic. In terms of religion, 98.4% were Romanian Orthodox; 0.3% were Roman Catholics; and 0.2% each Pentecostals, Christians Evangelicals, Baptists, and Evangelicals.” A further 0.2% were atheists or not religious.” We estimate that there are 177,485 Romanians in Ukraine today. Based on survey data from the 1930 census, 88.0% of residents were Romanians, 3.0% Jews, 2.5% Hungarians, 2.2% Roma, and 1.4% Germans living in the country at that time.

Economy

A prosperous industrial city in Romania, it is home to many factories and large-scale businesses. It is the center of the automotive industry in Romania. In nearby Mioveni, it has its Automobile Dacia automaker, other automobile parts manufacturers are also located within its urban area (Dräxlmaier Group, Lear Corporation), and Optar SRL is located in its vicinity. The city also houses the Arpechim oil refinery, part of the Petróleo group. This plant has traditionally been controversial due to its poor pollution records. The Ministry of the Environment withdrew Arpechim’s permit in 2007, but Petrom took issue with the decision in court. The company has started reducing its activity over several years as they wait for eventual closure.

The city is surrounded by hills and wineries in Romania. Pitești has dozens of wineries and is one of the best-known ones. Ștefănești, which is on the opposite bank of the Argeș River, is one of the more notable names in Romania.

Education

There are two universities in the city of Pitești. The state-run University of Pitești was founded in 1946, and the private Constantin Brâncoveanu University (founded in 1991 with branches in Brăila and Râmnicu Vâlcea). There are 17 secondary schools, two high schools, and 20 primary schools to offer an education. This ranges from preschool up until the pre-university level.

Dinicu Golescu’s public library was founded in 1869, and it was funded by a woman member of the upper class, who left 200 Austrian ducats to ensure this project. The institution became operational in 1880, and a large part of the volumes was bequeathed by historian George Ionescu-Gion immediately following his death in 1904. His donation included over a thousand books in Romanian, French and Italian. The library moved into its current headquarters in the city center in 2003.

Festivals

Pitești annually hosts a festival and fair known as the Tulip Symphony. Three thousand bulbs of tulips were imported in 1973 from Arad and Oradea and planted in its central location. As a result, Pitești became known for planting tulips, and the local authorities initiated the flower-themed festival in 1978. Held in the cultural center building, the festival includes folk music performances, scientific conferences, and a visual art exhibit. Youth sports competitions are also a part of this annual event.

Sport

The major football club in the city is FC Argeș Pitești, which has generally played in Liga I. They typically play at Nicolae Dobrin Stadium. Another great thing about Pitești is that it is home to a football team, Internațional Pitești. The club has its stadium, perfect for anyone looking for a sports fix. The school doubles as a junior team and even hosts basketball games and exhibition volleyball matches.

Pitești has one of Romania’s most significant swimming pools, and CSM Pitești plays football games here weekly. The pool is also open to the public, with a separate outdoor area in Tudor Vladimirescu. Two kilometers away is Bascov, which has another public collection on the grounds of Budeasa Dam. The Budeasa Dam regularly features national canoeing races and recreational fishing. There’s also a tennis challenger tournament annually on grounds in Boscov.
