Ploiești Overview

Ploiești, formerly known as Ploești, is a city and county seat in Prahova County within the Romanian region of Muntenia. It’s located just 56 km north of Bucharest.

History

Ploiești is likely recorded as early as the 16th Century and was mentioned in documents during Michael the Brave‘s reign, the Prince of Wallachia (r. 1593 to 1601). Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the town served as a center for trade and handicraft manufacturing. The Ploiești-Brașov road was opened in 1864, and the first railway arrived in 1882. Many schools and hospitals were built around this time.

The mid-19th Century saw the Romanian city of Ploiești become one of the world’s leading oil extraction, refining, and distribution sites. The Mehedins opened the world’s first refinery in Ploiești in 1856-57. The city is also infamous for the short-lived Republic of Ploiești, which took place between April and May 1870 and was a revolt against the Romanian Monarchy.

When World War I broke out, and the Central Powers invaded Romania, Ploiești’s oil production made it a prime target. Led by Colonel John Griffiths, the British Army launched an operation and bombed oil production facilities before setting them ablaze. This ultimately destroyed infrastructure related to the industry in this area.

Although damaged after the 1940 earthquake, the city functioned as a significant source of oil for Nazi Germany during much of World War II. The Allies once made a strategic bombing attack on Romania’s oil fields and companies. This was during the Halverson Project in June 1942 and Operation Tidal Wave in August 1943–the attack on Ploiești took place as part of this series of bombings without achieving any significant delay. Troops from the Soviet Red Army captured Ploiești on 24 August 1944.

After the war, the Romanian Communist government nationalized the oil industry to modernize and repair infrastructure that had been damaged during wartime.

Demographics

The population of Ploiești went from 56,460 in 1912 to 252,715 in 1992. The city’s population has been declining ever since the fall of communism, thanks to both emigration and a steadily aging population. The population was 232,000 in 2002 but dropped to 197,000 in 2011. An additional 266,000 people are expected to live in the proposed Ploiești metropolitan area.

The Romanian ethnic majority (90.6 %) is the largest, followed by the Roma minority (2.4%). Almost 7% of the population is unknown about their ethnicity. The vast majority of people living in Ploiești declare themselves as Orthodox Christians (90,7%).

Economy

After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, Ploiești experienced a rapid economic loss. The city is situated only 60 km from Bucharest and has several infrastructure projects on the way. It is a solid industrial center focused primarily on manufacturing. Although oil production in the region is declining steadily, there is still a thriving processing industry with four operating oil refineries linked by pipelines to Bucharest, the Black Sea port of Constanța, and the Danube port of Giurgiu. Ploiești has seen a surge in textile manufacturing, as materials such as nylon and polyester were manufactured and then subsequently developed during the 19th Century.

Transportation

Ploiești is on the A3 motorway and is 45 km from Henri Coanda International Airport. Prahova Valley ski resorts are an hour away. Ploiești is a railway center in the country and links Bucharest with Transylvania and Moldavia.

Ploiești’s public transport system is run by TCE and includes a range of buses, trolleybuses, and trams. Ploiești’s modern yellow bus fleet is one of the most advanced in southeastern Europe. The buses connect all city sectors, transporting an average of 150,000 passengers daily. There are 800 streets in Ploiești that are administrated by the section of the municipal road. On average, 5,300 vehicles make their way through Ploiești daily, with the two ring roads diverting traffic from the center. The city’s 256 buses are supplemented by 36 trams and 25 trolleybuses, carrying around 70 million passengers each year. There are 33 bus lines and four other modes of public transportation in total. The combined length of all these is 415.46 km (258.15 mi.).

Culture

Ploiești is the location of the Ploiești Philharmonic Orchestra, a critically acclaimed orchestra in Romania, and some other vital local sports franchises. They are currently ranked 4th in Romanian football, first in women’s handball, and 9th in men’s basketball.

The city of Linz offers countless opportunities for cultural and architectural highlights. One example is the Cultural Palace, which exhibits modern art. The city also has a Clock Museum that stands out with its recent renovations. Featuring a collection of clocks and watches gathered from across the world, including items from Nicolae Simache; the Oil Museum; the Ploiești Art Museum, which the Quintus family has donated; and the Hagi Prodan Museum. This date back to 1785. The property of a merchant, Ivan Hagi Prodan, contains elements of old Romanian architecture and hosted the first museum in Ploiești after World War I, “Prahova Museum.” In 2011, the Golden Carpathian European Film and Fair hosted a Goran Bregovic concert in Ploiești.

Education

The first school in Ploiești was opened in 1777, and by 1832 several other elementary schools were opened. In 1864, the first high school was founded, which offered education for five years.

Geology

The Mio-Pliocene Zone in the Ploiești region has been exploited for hydrocarbons and coal since the 19th Century. The zone extends from the flysch on the north to the Moesian Platform on the south. The area is located in alternating clay-marl-shale sand and conglomerate rocks. This results in forming structural and stratigraphic traps, which originated from salt diapirism. These gave rise to anticline fold formations). Four major anticlinal structures run parallel to the Carpathian range. The majority of oil loads can be found in the Pliocene sands, which comprise 60% of total production. However, there is a decent amount of Miocene and Sarmatian sands with some oil. The following are the major oil fields in Romania: Moreni-Gura Ocniței, Băicoi-Țintea, and Boldești.

Geography

Ploiești is located in the center of Romania, in the northeastern part of the Romanian Plain, at the 25th Parallel. Historically it has always been an important city for Bucharest and remains so even today. The town is around 60 square kilometers in size, and 35 square kilometers are suburban settlements. There are two rivers in the city’s proximity: the Prahova river, on the southwest, briefly passes through the town through the Brazi settlement, and the Teleajen River passes through the Blejoi, Bucov, and Berceni villages. The city lies on the Dâmbu River, which springs from the hills around the neighboring town of Băicoi. The river can be a low flow rate sometimes.

Climate

The region’s climate is similar to Romania’s capital, Bucharest. If you’re visiting, you’ll need to pack clothes for hot summer-type temperatures per Köppen climate classification guidelines. The average annual temperature was 10.5 °C (50.9 °F), with record breaches as cold as -30 °C (-22 °F) in January 1952 and as hot as 43°C (109°F) in 2007. Seventeen days are very frigid, 26 are cold, 99 are moderate, and 30 have warm temperatures. Economic growth is high in the Arctic and temperate zones.
