Pontevedra Overview

On the Iberian Peninsula’s northwest coast is Pontevedra, a Spanish city. Besides being the capital of the Comarca (County) and the Province of Pontevedra, it is also the capital of Rías Baixas in Galicia. The city is also the capital of its municipality, which is often considered an extension of the town.

In addition to its urban planning, pedestrianization, and old-town charm, the city is best known for its urban planning. In recent years, it has been awarded several international awards for its urban quality and quality of life, accessibility, and urban mobility policy, including the international European Intermodes Urban Mobility Award in 2013 and the Dubai International Best Practices Award for Sustainable Development in 2015, which was awarded by UN-Habitat in partnership with Dubai Municipality, and the Excellence Award by the Center for Active Design in New York City in 2015. In 2020, the city received the first prize for urban safety from the European Commission. Since Pontevedra’s car-free center transformed it into one of the most accessible European cities, many European and American studies have been conducted on its excellent urban planning.

Name

The name of the city is derived from pons, pontis (bridge), and veteran, veteran, veterum (old, established). Vulgar Latin Ponte Vetera, a masculine word, became feminine in Galicia in the 13th century, which became Pontevedra by the modern Galician toponymy, “the old bridge,” about a Roman bridge across the Lérez River that was located near the Burgo bridge, which still stands to this day.

From the Latin poem veteran, which means “old bridge,” the town’s name refers to the first bridge that the Romans built to cross the Lérez River and Ria de Pontevedra. According to historians today, since ponto (Pontus) meant sea and Vedra meant green, the city’s name could be derived from the greenness of the ocean caused by seaweed tides, with the meaning of the city as a green sea.

History

There is a local legend relating the foundation of Pontevedra to Teucer, the Trojan War hero. This legend was further emphasized by the suspicion that Greek traders may have arrived in the Rias Baixas area in ancient times. Despite this, historians and archaeologists tend to agree that the initial settlement was likely formed during the integration of Gallaecia (old Galicia) into the Roman Empire (circa 1st century B.C.) (References needed). Currently, the city’s name is a Latin composite, derived from Pons/Pontis (bridge) and Veteris/Vetera (old), hence Ponte(m)Vetera(m), and the Galician language Ponte-Vedra, “old bridge,” referring to the ancient Roman bridge over Lérez River. It became an intermediate town during the Suebic period (circa 5th–6th century A.D.), well-connected since Roman times.

In the 12th century, Pontevedra became an important commercial center; it reached its zenith in the 15th century as a center for trade and communications. As the primary urban center of Galicia, Pontevedra was the most important city. Pontevedra has the second-largest “old town” in Galicia, just after Santiago de Compostela. The Portuguese Way, or the southern route of the Way of Saint James, passes through Pontevedra. Tourists and pilgrims enjoy the scallop-shaped floor plan of the Church of the Pilgrim Virgin.

Despite the increase in fishing, the 16th century still saw it as a commercial city. Since Pontevedra was a secure port open to the sea and the largest Galician port. One of Christopher Columbus’ ships, the Carrack Santa Maria, initially called La Gallega (“The Galician”), was built in Pontevedra. The sedimentation caused by the Lérez River gradually rendered the harbor unsuitable for large-scale navigation centuries later. After the end of the 16th century, the city began to decline, which had already started for the rest of Galicia.

Location

Pontevedra is located between 42°20′ and 42°30′ north and 8°33′ and 8°41′ west, on the southwestern Galician coast, commonly called Rias Baixas. There are 118.3 square kilometers (45.7 square miles) in the municipality, and it is about 20 km (12 mi) wide in all directions.

Climate

The climate in Pontevedra is humid oceanic (Köppen Cfb). The average temperature is 15 °C (59 °F), with an average daily temperature of 9.5 °C (49.1 °F) in January and 20.5 °C (68.9 °F) in July. Due to Pontevedra’s proximity to the sea and the ria’s moderating effect, these temperatures are unusually mild for a city so far north. Pontevedra is subject to occasional Atlantic storms in winter, like the rest of the Galician coast. The temperature drops quickly during these periods; rain and gales are common. Pontevedra’s climate is classified as a maritime subtropical climate zone by the Trewartha climate classification, which it falls short of by the Köppen classification due to its cool summer nights.

Population

A total population of 83,260 lives in Pontevedra, which comprises the city of Pontevedra and fifteen rural parishes nearby. As a result, there are 710.1 residents per square kilometer, which is relatively high. More than two-thirds of the population live in the city, and fewer than one-third live in the rural parishes.

Economy

Pontevedra has traditionally been a trading center, and streets and squares still exist today thanks to guilds that flourished in the old town in the Middle Ages. During the 16th century, Pontevedra was the main Galician port, and fishing and sea trading were very active.

During the territorial division of Spain in 1833, Galicia was divided into four provinces, with Pontevedra as its capital. After Franco’s dictatorship gave this city a free-trade zone and a Development Pole, it became an administrative and commercial hub, unlike Vigo, which attracted industrial activity. Pontevedra would only have modern industries in the 1960s.

Currently, 65 percent of the workforce is employed in the tertiary sector, while 17 percent is in the industrial sector. Regarding industrial activity, there are only a few companies, namely pulp mills (where the municipality is seeking to close the ENCE biofactory) and construction companies. Despite several policies to improve the situation, the tertiary sector could be more dynamic. The number of tourists is increasing, with most visitors coming from Spain and Portugal. The Xunta de Galicia (Galician Government) data indicate a 7% unemployment rate (June 2021). Caixa de Pontevedra eventually merged into other entities until the current Abanca, headquartered in Pontevedra.

Health

There are many quality clinics and health centers in Pontevedra, including the Montecelo Hospital, the most critical health center in the region and one of the largest in the province. Oncology is one of the hospital’s most renowned departments. In Galicia, public health is regulated by the Galician Health Service (Servizio Galego de Saúde). Apart from the Montecelo Hospital, established in 1973 in the parish of Mourente, the University Hospital Complex of Pontevedra (CHOP) includes the Pontevedra Provincial Hospital, established in 1897 in the city’s center. Furthermore, in Quirónsalud, there are private hospitals, such as the Miguel Dominguez Hospital, founded in 1947 as Hospital Dominguez on Fray Juan de Navarrete Street, or the Institute of Neuro-Rehabilitation Quirónsalud Pontevedra. Also in Pontevedra are Quirón Salud, Adeslas, and Vithas health centers: the Quirónsalud Pontevedra Medical Centre, the Quirónsalud Pontevedra Rehabilitation Centre, and the Adeslas Pontevedra Medical Centre.

Education

University departments are located on the Pontevedra Campus, a branch of the University of Vigo with campuses in Pontevedra, Ourense, and Vigo. These include Advertising and Public Relations, Fine Arts, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Forest Engineering, Fashion, Education and Sport Sciences, Governance and Public Management, Design, and Media and Communication Sciences (Audiovisual Communication). In Pontevedra, students can study Fine Arts, Advertising and Public Relations, Public Management, and Design at the university level, as this is the only location in Galicia where these disciplines can be studied. As well as the Faculty of Fine Arts, Pontevedra is home to the Higher School of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage of Galicia, located in the San Fernando building. Additionally, the city has the only comic and illustration school in Galicia (private), called O Garage hermético (the airtight garage).
