Przemyśl dates back to the 8th century, making it one of the oldest cities in southern Poland (after Kraków). A fortified Gord belonged to the Ledzianie (Lendians), a West Slavic tribe. Great Moravia encompassed the fortified settlement and surrounding region in the 9th century. There is a good chance that the city’s name dates back to the Moravian period. As early as the 9th century, archeological remains confirm the presence of a Christian monastic settlement.

Local Lendians declared allegiance to the Hungarians after the Hungarians invaded the Great Moravian Empire in 899. The region then became a site of contention between Poland, Kievan Rus, and Hungary beginning in at least the 9th century, with Przemyśl, along with other Cherven Grods, falling under the control of the Polans (Polanie), who would in the 10th century under the rule of Mieszko I establish the Polish state. Przemykla became an essential local center on the eastern frontier of Piast’sPiast’s realm when Mieszko I annexed the Lendians.

The city was mentioned by Nestor the Chronicler when it was captured by Vladimir I of Rus in 981. Przemyl was retaken by Rus in 1031 after returning to Poland in 1018. After Bolesaw II, the Generous retook Przemyl and temporarily made it his residence around 1069. Przemyl returned to Poland again. A semi-independent Principality under the Rus’Rus’ lordship was established in Peremyshl in 1085.

During the reign of Polish king Boleslaw I the Brave in the 11th century, the palatium complex included a Latin rotunda. The city was founded by an Orthodox eparchy sometime before 1218. From 1246, Przemysl became part of the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia under Mongol rule.
