Queluz Overview
Queluz is a Portuguese city with a population of 15,000 people, and it’s also the only city in Sintra Municipality and the Lisbon metropolitan area. It is famous for hosting Queluz National Palace, the 18th-century palace of the Portuguese Royal Family, and notable institutions like the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art.
History
There is no consensus on the origin of the name Queluz. David Lim and José Pedro Machado have hypothesized that it comes from Arabic câ and lûs, which would mean almond in English—making sense due to the area’s abundance of almond trees. Another example is that some people believe Mount Abraão is the center point of creation. The story told by people who hold this belief is that it was once submerged beneath water and appeared on top of the mountain at sunrise.
The first humans in this area date back to Late Neolithic or early Chalcolithic times because archeologists have found many artifacts left behind by these long-gone societies. The town’s history is rich and very diverse, and it began in 3000 BC and spread to the modern-day parish of Massamá.
In 1147, Afonso I of Portugal’s forces conquered Lisbon because of its strategic location. To defend it, a similar campaign within the Sintra mountains successfully captures Queluz, bringing the entire heath under Christian control.
The region wasn’t known as a place of much activity in the early centuries up until the 18th century. Clergy and nobility developed homes, farms, and a few estates.
The Infantado Palace was built in the 18th century by Infante Pedro of Braganza with help from his architect brother Mateus Vicente de Oliveira; it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Following his marriage to Queen Maria I of Portugal, King João VI radically expanded the estate into a pleasure palace, today known as Queluz National Palace.
Ever since the Portuguese Royal Court moved to Queluz during the reign of Maria I and Pedro III, more and more nobles have been setting up estates and palaces in this region. Sintra was a popular retreat for many noblemen.
Culture
Between July and August, there’s a free fair outside the D. Maria Pousada that recreates the golden age of the Queluz National Palace. Activities on offer include traditional food stalls, arts and crafts, exhibits, and games. The Portuguese Eighteenth Century Fair will bring you back in time to experience life during the reign of Queen Mary I. You can buy arts and crafts from artisans and merchants that reflect a time when this work was valued. Choirs are joint in this city on Sundays, and the three in Quez have been performing choral concerts since the inauguration of Queluz National Palace.
Visitors to the Monte Abraão Fair, held every Saturday on Rua Cidade Desportiva, will have a large selection of items for sale. There are clothes, handicrafts, fruits and veggies, flowers, and more!
Sport
Queluz has loads of sporting teams. One of the most popular is Real Sport Clube, a football team. C.A. Queluz is another well-known sports team; they play basketball in their spare time. However, their primary sport is athletics. Real Sport Clube plays as a club in the Segunda Liga (Portugal’s 2nd most crucial league competition).
C.A. Queluz won the Portuguese Championship in 1984 and 2005, and they also held the Portuguese Cup in 1983. The team achieved a double in 2005, and JOMA has already won the Portuguese championships in individual and group competitions.
Climate
Queluz has a temperate climate year-round, with reasonably mild summers and cold winters. The summers are mostly dry, warm, and clear, and the winters are wet, cold, and partly cloudy. The best time of year for hot-weather activities is from mid-July to early September when the temperature typically varies from 47°F to 81°F and below 41°F or above 92°F.
