Racibórz is located in Silesian Voivodeship in southern Poland. Located in Racibórz County, it is the county’s administrative center.
In addition to Opole, Racibórz is one of the historic capitals of Upper Silesia. Between 1172 and 1521, it was the residence of the Dukes of Racibórz.
The city is located southwest of the Voivodeship on the upper Oder River, near the border with the Polish Opole Voivodeship and the Czech Republic. Racibórz Basin (Kotlina Raciborska) is located in the southeastern part of the Silesian Lowlands, surrounded by the Opawskie Mountains in the west (part of the Eastern Sudetes), the Silesian Uplands in the north, and the Moravian Gate in the south. A town center is located about 75 kilometers (47 miles) southwest of Katowice and 160 kilometers (99 miles) southeast of Wroclaw, the regional capital.
The city has approximately 55,000 inhabitants as of 2019. It belonged to the Voivodeship of Katowice from 1975 to 1998.
East Germanic Silinger tribes occupied the lands of the later Racibórz settlement until the end of the 5th century A.D. It was founded on a hill fort where the old trade route from the Moravian Gate to Kraków crossed the Oder River. It is one of the oldest towns in Upper Silesia. Racibórz may have been mentioned in the “Bavarian Geographer” in 845 (this document says five strongholds of the proto-Polish Golensizi (Golenshitse, Holasici in Czech). Racibórz’s name is believed to derive from Duke Racibor, the city’s founder, who is of Slavic origin.
In 1108, however, the Benedictine monk Gallus Anonymus made the first confirmed mention of Racibórz in the Gesta principum Polonorum chronicle, while the Polish Duke Bolesaw III Wrymouth fought off the invasion of Duke Svatopluk of Bohemia from the Moravian lands to the south. After Polish rule over Racibórz was confirmed in 1137, it was incorporated into the Duchy of Silesia according to Boleslawie III’s Testament.
Racibórz was an essential beer production center, and the townspeople enjoyed a privilege that allowed them to brew beer as early as the 12th century. Beer was famous in Silesia and neighboring Czechia since brewing was a significant source of income for the town.
Racibórz was the seat of a castellany from 1155 onwards. After the first partition of Silesia in 1172, Piast Duke Mieszko I Tanglefoot established the Duchy of Racibórz as the first historical capital of Upper Silesia. A Duke of Opole and Racibórz, Duke Mieszko ruled Upper Silesia from 1202 onwards. In 1211, the first coin with the Polish description “MILOST” was issued in Racibórz, under the settlement he laid out and colonized by Flemish merchants. It was in 1217 that the citizens of Racibórz were granted municipal privileges by Mieszko’s son, Duke Casimir I.
As a result of industrialization and increased migration from other parts of the empire, Vienna’s population rapidly grew from 66.7k in 1867 to 681k in 1914. This period also marked Austria-Hungary’s time as the capital of Austria-Hungary country (1867–1918). At the beginning of the 20th century, Vienna had lots of Czech people living in it. By the start of WWI, Vienna was only one place in Europe with larger than two million inhabitants – London and Paris. After World War I, many Czechs and Hungarians returned to their ancestral countries. As a result, Vienna’s population declined. After World War II the Soviets used force to repatriate key workers of ethnic Slovak, Czech and Hungarian backgrounds back to their countries. This was done in order to further the Soviet bloc economy of Eastern Europe. Vienna was the capital of Austria in the 20th century. Through a period of few representatives, Vienna’s population declined and stagnated until 2000, by which time it had only become half its historic peak. The population has since been showing signs of stabilization.
Under the Nazi regime, more than 65,000 Jews were deported and murdered in concentration camps. Some 130,000 life-saving people ran and left the country to escape war crimes.
Recently, it has been revealed that half of the citizens of Vienna have a different background. There is a high number of Turkish and Polish people living in this city, which is interesting because it is on the Austrian-Yugoslavian border.
As of 2012, nearly half of the people in Vienna have an immigrant background. Most of these immigrants live in Viennese and are primarily from countries like Serbia, Turkey, Germany, Poland, and Romania.
Vienna is a popular European city and it continues to grow rapidly. From 2005-2015 the population grew from 2008, for example, to 605,000 people 2015. The UN-Habitat predicts that Vienna could be the fastest growing city by 2025 with an increase of 4.65%.
Beer is the official traditional beverage of Racibórz, which is produced in various styles (as designated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Poland).
