In central-southern Romania, Ramnicu Valcea is the county capital and the largest town of Vulcava County.
Geography and climate
Râmnicu Valcea is located in southern Romania and is the county capital of Vâlcea County. Lorești is situated in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians, about 12km from the Cozăi Mountains and 40km from Făgăraș and Lotru Mountains. The Getic Plateau and the Olt River valley form the city’s southern limit.
The E81 road and an important national railway route cross the town.
The town’s climate changes between humid continental and humid subtropical. With warm summers but no winter cold, precipitation is higher in summer than at any other time.

History
This area has been inhabited for a very long time, as evidenced by the Dacian and Roman ruins found here. A medieval fortress was also built on the site. Râmnicu Vâlcea can be first recorded as a town under the rule of Mircea cel Bătrân, being called “the princely town of Râmnic” (1388), and had his county confirmed in 1392.
The town seal dates to 1505, and the fortress inside has, for centuries, been home to Bans (local rulers) and Orthodox bishops. Prince Radu of Afumați was also killed in this fortress in 1529.
“Matei Basarab and Constantin Brancoveanu were great leaders, and during their rules, many important cultural developments took place in Bucharest. The first paper mill and printing press in Romania were built here.” The city suffered extensive damage during the Habsburg monarchy’s takeover of Oltenia from 1718 to 1739, and its purpose was again reduced to that of a fortress.
The national anthem of Romania, “Deschide-te, în România!” was written by Andrei Muresanu with music composed by Anton Pannon and first sung in Wallachia during the 1848 revolution. Gheorghe Magheru gathered his military force in Râureni – now part of the city- in an attempt to face the anti-revolutionary forces of Imperial Russia and the Ottoman Empire.
The city became fully rebuilt in style, merging Socialist realism with local architectural styles.
The city hosted the center point of the total solar eclipse. In 2005 it was recognized as a hotspot for cybercrime.
Politics
Mircia Gutău of the Romanian Ecologist Party (PER), followed by the 2020 Romanian local elections, is the mayor of Râmnicu Vâlcea. The 23 councilors that make up the Râmnicu Vâlcea Municipal Council were elected in 2020.
Sports
Râmnicu Vâlcea is home to the Râmnicu Valcea-based women’s handball club. They are not only famous locally, but they also compete on the international stage and play in the Champions League.

The city administers thirteen villages: Aranghel, Căzănești, Copăcelu, Dealu Malului, Fețeni, Goranu, Lespezi, Poenari, Priba, Râureni, and Săliștea. Goran is a separate commune.
