St. Peter und Paul

Ratingen’s parish church is one of the earliest Gothic hall churches in the Rhineland. From a Romanesque basilica from the mid-1100s, much of the architecture dates to the end of the 13th century.

Textilfabrik Cromford

Ratingen was the first in continental Europe to have a cotton spinning mill in 1783. Johann Gottfried Brügelmann set up the mill based on Arkwright’s Cromford Mill in Derbyshire.

Marktplatz

Ratingen is complete with a visit to the marketplace where people have traded goods since 1371. There is a picturesque scene here, surrounded by historic townhouses, the 14th-century Bürgerhaus, and the Church of St Peter and Paul.

Stadtmauer

Ratingen’s old town looks almost like a perfect circle on a map, and until recently, it was surrounded by a 15-ton defensive wall. 

Cromford Park

Until 1977, the park surrounding the Cromford spinning mill was private. Since Cromford Park became a listed monument twenty years ago, most people agree it is one of the Rhineland’s most significant cultural treasures.

Oberschlesisches Landesmuseum

Located in Ratingen since 1983, this museum documents the history and culture of southern Poland’s Upper Silesian region.

Im Roten Hahn

One of the oldest private residences in the old town is the half-timbered house on Oberstraße 23. Ratingen’s official legal record, the Stadtbuch, first mentioned Im Roten Hahn in 1425.

Museum Ratingen

Located near the old walls, Ratingen’s city museum clashes slightly with the surrounding historic architecture. In 1978, sheer concrete walls and exposed ventilation pipes reflected the Pompidou Center’s style.

Blauer See

A limestone quarry on Cromford Park’s east side was flooded and converted into a recreation park in the 1930s.

Bürgerhaus am Markt

Ratingen’s municipal and political life was centered in this discreet building on the marketplace for hundreds of years.
