The city of Recklinghausen is the northernmost in the Ruhr Area and the capital of the Recklinghausen district. In the north, it is characterized by large fields and farms, while in the south, it is characterized by industry. Nordrhein-Westphalia’s 22nd-largest city is Recklinghausen, the 60th-largest city in Germany.
As Ricoldinchuson, the city first appeared in 1017 and became the center of Vest Recklinghausen in 1150. The town privileges of Recklinghausen were granted in 1236. Jews were recorded in the city as early as 1305. In the 15th and 16th centuries, ownership of Recklinghausen changed several times under the County of Vest, and in 1576, the whole county was pawned to the Elector of Cologne. As part of the Cologne War, a feud over religious parity in the Electorate of Cologne and electoral influence in the Holy Roman Empire, the city was plundered three times between 1582 and 1583, 1586, and 1587.
Over 100 witchcraft trials took place in Recklinghausen from 1514 to 1710. The activity peaked in the 1580s/81s and again in the 1588s/89s. She was sentenced to death by sword and burned after spending 16 months in prison for witchcraft.
In 1600, the Vest Recklinghausen administration was divided into two parts, with Recklinghausen administering the eastern part. As well as Recklinghausen, the town includes Ahsen, Datteln, Flaesheim, Hamm-Bossendorf, Henrichenburg, Herten, Horneburg, Oer, Suderwich, Waltrop, and Westerholt. During 1803-1811, it became the capital of the Dukes of Arenberg, who retained the title. In 1815, the Vest became a Bürgermeisterei, whose seat was in the town. 1819 saw Herten join the Recklinghausen Burgermeisterei, and 1821 saw Erkenschwick join.
A prisoner-of-war camp, Stalag XX-B, was established in the city in December 1939, but it was relocated after a few days, and a forced labor camp operated from 1941 to 1943. The RAF bombed Recklinghausen/Forstezung on 15 January 1945 as part of the Oil Campaign, and the U.S. 137th Infantry captured South Recklinghausen (Recklinghausen Süd) on 1 April 1945.
Recklinghausen has an annual cultural festival known as the Ruhrfestspiele (Ruhr Festival). A cultural program with many national and international theatrical productions starts on 1 May yearly. Among the major exhibitions in 2008 was Speed the Plow, starring Kevin Spacey and Jeff Goldblum. Ruhrfestspielhaus is the main stage, but other theaters around Recklinghausen also participate.
Two significant motorways cross the area of the city: the A2 and the A43. A waterway named Rhein-Herne-Kanal links the town with the more extensive channels. A total of two railway stations are located in Recklinghausen. There are two stations in Recklinghausen: the Central Station (Recklinghausen Hauptbahnhof) and the South Station (Recklinghausen Südbahnhof).
