Regensburg Overview
Regensburg is a city on the Danube in southeastern Germany. It has over 11,300 years of history and is one of the best-preserved medieval centers consisting of a walled old town region with many churches including the famous 12th-century Stone Bridge, which crosses over the river to the old town. Regensburg Cathedral is a Gothic cathedral in Regensburg, Germany. It was the base of the Regensburger Domspatzen choir from the 13th century until 1843. Walhalla honors great Germans.
History
The first settlements in the Regensburg area date from the Stone Age and is home to many pre-Roman artifacts. The oldest Celtic name given to a site near Regensburg was Radasbona, where there’s still evidence of a Roman fort built around AD 90.
Castra Regina was built in 179, during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The camp was an important portion of the city. It surrounds what is today the Old City of Regensburg and covers a large portion to the north. Some parts overlapped with other districts, but it mostly corresponded to what is now known as Nordweststadt. It is believed that as early as late Roman times the city was the seat of a bishop, and St Boniface re-established the Bishopric of Regensburg in 739. The city was elective at first but became more popular with time, which led to its seat being permanently changed to Bavaria.
From the early 6th century, Regensburg was the seat of a ruling family known as the Agilolfings. From about 530 to the first half of the 13th century, it was the capital of Bavaria. Regensburg remained an important city during Charlemagne’s reign. In 792, Regensburg hosted the ecclesiastical section of Charlemagne’s General Assembly. During this day, he condemned the heresy of adoptionism taught by their Spanish counterparts, Elipandus of Toledo and Felix of Urgell. After the Carolingian Empire was divided in 843, Regensburg became Louis II’s new seat of power. The Bohemian princes came there two years later to be baptized. This was the starting point of the Christianization of the Czechs, and the diocese of Regensburg became the mother diocese of that of Prague. These events had a wide impact on cultural history as they were consequently part of Slovakia until 1620. A memorial plaque was unveiled at St John’s Church in the Czech and German Languages a few years ago. It commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ there.
In 800, the city – which had 23,000 inhabitants by then – had increased in size to 40,000.

In 1096, on the way to the First Crusade, Peter the Hermit led a mob of crusaders that attempted to force the mass conversion of the Jews of Regensburg and killed all those who resisted.

Regensburg falls under both the humid continental and oceanic climate categories with a climate classification of Dfb/Cfb. While the average temperature recently in Germany is slightly more than the average temperature in other countries, only 5 of the country’s 80 larger cities qualify as having cool climates month-round. There is the oldest dictionary in the world based on a dialect & thought to be Johann Ludwig Prasch’s Glossarium Bavaricum. It was published in Regensburg in 1689 and contains 500 words from the Bavarian variation of German. Regensburg’s Bauerntheater has been around for nearly a century and continues to provide performances in Bavarian. “Mei Fähr Lady” was a German play written in 2011. Events
Every two years the city’s main festival, the Regensburg Dult, attracts over 100,000 visitors. This is Bavaria’s fourth largest festival. The citizen celebration, Bürgerfest, in the Old Town just happens every two years. Happening in the process of the second weekend in July, people dressed as knights and other medieval characters come together at the Regensburg Spectaculum to sell their wares and celebrate medieval culture. This Christmas market happens in December, but there are also several others throughout the city.

The population of Regensburg is largely Catholic and Protestant. More than half the population identifies with Catholicism, while there are a few Protestants as well. The percentage of people who identify as non-religious or unaffiliated is about 35%, which means nearly 60% of the population does not have an affiliation to any religion.

51 members make up the City Council, which includes the Mayor and Deputy Mayors. The elections take place in two phases at the same time.
