Reggio Calabria Overview

Sicily and Reggio Calabria are separated by the Strait of Messina, a coastal city in southern Italy. A pair of ancient, life-size Greek statues can be found at the National Archaeological Museum. A Bergamot Museum is nearby, where you can see the tools used to extract oil from this citrus fruit. Aspromonte National Park, which lies to the east, contains beech and pine forests home to wolves, boar, and deer.

Ancient times

There needs to be more reliable information on the area’s history before the Greeks arrived in the eighth century B.C. Fictional accounts describe different peoples in the region, including the Osci (sometimes called Opici), Trojans, Oenotrians, Ligures, Ausones, Mamertines, Taureanes, Sicels, Morgeti, and Itali. In addition, they claim that the land around Reggio was originally called Saturnia or Neptunia. Italian first referred to the area around Reggio, then expanded to southern Calabria (later known as Bruttium), and eventually became the name of the entire Italian peninsula by the third century B.C. King Italus, an Oenotrian king from the region, is credited with giving the title to the city.

One of the first Greek colonies in southern Italy was Reggio after Cumae. A colony was established by Chalcis’ inhabitants in 730 or 743 BC on the site of Erythra (Ερυθρά), meaning “red.” The city is said to have been founded by King Iocastus, son of Aeolus, who was buried on the Punta Calamizzi promontory (called “Pallantion”) and appeared on its coins. As a result, the colony retained the name “Rhegion” (Ῥήγιον). Pseudo-Scylax also described a Greek city.

During the 5th and 6th centuries BC, Rhegion reached great economic and political power under Anaxilas, who ruled as a tyrant from 494 to 476 BC. The Rhegian control of both the Straits of Messina shores was extended by Anaxilas’ conquest of Zancle (modern Messina). He also conquered Locri in 477 BC, but his efforts failed. His two sons were too young to rule when he died in 476 BC, so their regent, Micythus, held power. Pyxous (modern Policastro Bussentino) was Rhegion’s colony in Campania when he ruled it in 471 BC. After Micythus’ removal from power by Hieron I of Syracuse in 467 BC, Anaxilas’ sons ruled independently until their deposition in 461 BC. Athens and Rhegion were allies during the Peloponnesian War. According to an Athenian inscription (I.G. I3 53), this alliance was renewed in 433 BC. During the First Sicilian Expedition (427–425 BC), the Athenians supported Rhegion against Locri. Athens, however, received only limited assistance from Rhegion when they launched the much larger Sicilian Expedition in 415–413 BC.

Geography

According to a study of 386 European cities, Reggio Calabria has the least green space due to its high population density. There was a wide variation in green space coverage, ranging from 1.9 percent in Reggio di Calabria, Italy, to 46 percent in Ferro, Spain.” According to the study, “green space per capita varied by two orders of magnitude from 3 to 4 m2 to more than 300 m2 in Liège (Belgium), Oulu (Finland) and Valenciennes (France)” to Reggio di Calabria (Italy). Aside from the urban area, the elevated adjacent regions offer a large amount of green space and forests. There is also a national park called Aspromonte included in this.

Population

182,551 (2017)

Climate

The Köppen climate classification classifies Reggio Calabria as typical Mediterranean (Köppen: Csa). Messina, which lies on the other side of the strait, has a warmer climate during the day and a calmer environment at night. There is also a big difference in precipitation since Messina receives about 300 mm (12 in) more than Rome.

Economy

Although Reggio has a large population, it maintains a somewhat rural ambiance. There is a large agricultural industry in the city, as well as exports of fruit, tobacco, briar, and the precious essence of bergamot, used in perfume making. Fishing is an essential industry in Reggio, which is a port city.

Beaches in the city have become popular tourist destinations. Aspromonte mountain behind the town contains the natural reserve of the Aspromonte National Park with panoramic views of the Strait of Messina from the snowy Mount Etna to the Aeolian Islands from the Ionian coast (Costa Jonica), the Tyrrhenian coast (Costa Viola, Purple Coast) and the Aspromonte mountain behind the city.

Sport

Reggina is the city’s primary association football team. The club plays at the Stadio Oreste Granillo, just a twenty-five-minute ferry ride from Messina. Throughout their history, both teams have faced each other in the Derby dello Stretto (Strait of Messina Derby). In addition, there is a central Calabrian derby with Crotone. In addition to HinterReggio Calcio, there is another much smaller team.
