The town’s history dates back to the 15th century when it was known as Rechyoka and Rechycha. Archaeological research has revealed evidence of Neolithic, Dacian, and Roman settlements. The town was mentioned in 1673 under the name Reszinitza, whose citizens paid taxes to Timișoara, and by 1690–1700, it was part of the District of Bocşa with other towns in the Bârzava Valley. During the conscription campaign of 1717, the city was referred to as Retziza. In 1771, it became one of the region’s most critical metal-manufacturing centers. Several factories were established near the villages of Reşița Română (Reschiza Kamerală or Oláh Resitza) and Reşița Montană (Eisenwerk Reschitza, Német(h) Reschitza or Resiczbánya) that laid the foundation for the industrial Reşița. At first, Reşița Montană was inhabited by Romanians [dubious – discuss][need quotation to verify] before 70 German families settled there in 1776. In 1941, 12,096 Germans lived here in the city, as opposed to 9,453 Romanians and 1861 Hungarians. Between 1880 and 1941, Germans were the dominant group in the city. After developing into a powerful industrial location in modern Romania, Reșița was declared a town in 1925 due to its development between 1910 and 1925. Municipality status was granted in 1968.

During the 1990s, Reşiţa lost most of its importance, and its economy suffered along with the Romanian economy. In 2006, the population decreased from 111,000 to 86,000, a drop of 13%. During the communist era, the Reşiţa Steelworks (Combinatul Siderurgic Reșița, C.S.R.) was bought by an American investor just one step away from bankruptcy. Today’s steelworks are run by T.M.K. Europe GmbH, a German subsidiary of OAO TMK, Moscow, undertaking modernization projects.
