Reus Overview

In Catalonia, Spain, Reus is the capital of Baix Camp, in the province of Tarragona. As a producer of wines and spirits, the area gained continental importance during the Phylloxera plague. Besides being a commercial center, it is also a rock-climbing center and the birthplace of architect Antoni Gaudí.

Name

There is some debate about the origin of the name. There is a theory that Reus comes from the Latin word for convict prisoners (reus), and as such, it would be a Roman prison. The most accepted theory is that the name comes from Celtic roots, originating from the root red, which created the name redis (or reddish), or inhabited place in a crossroad.

History

After receiving the region of Reus on June 3, 1154, Robert d’Aguiló repopulated it around 1150. As the archbishop of Tarragona gave a Castellan, Bertran de Castellet two-thirds of Reus on June 5, 1154. As a result of the distribution of ecclesiastical goods on June 29, 1159, the third of its Reus parish of Santa Maria was awarded to the camerlengo, which began the duplicity of the town’s governance. There is A third of Reus parish owned by the camerlengo. Redis or Reddis was the name of the city at this time. In 1183, the Castellan Bernat de Bell-lloc granted Reus the title of town, giving it ownership of houses and gardens, establishing a census to pay for farmland, reserving justice, and recognizing its vassalage towards Tarragona. The camerlengo Joan de Santboi confirmed the rights given by the castellan Bernard de Bell-lloc on June 2, 1186.

Reus revolted in 1305 against Archbishop Rodrigo Tello, who wanted the citizens of Reus to pay for rebuilding the walls of Tarragona. Reus was granted the right to conduct the market on Mondays by the king of Aragon in 1309. After the Bell-Lloc castellan dynasty became extinct in 1327, Bernard de Cabrera became the new castellan, but in 1335 the castellan was sold to Pere Mulet, who lost it in 1345. In 1349, Pere Mulet’s heirs sold their rights to Bernat d’Olzinelles. Pere Roger de Belfort disputed domain with Archbishop Lopez de Ayerbe, who sent an army that decimated the town. During the second attack, the attackers were repulsed. In a third attack, the city was sacked, and the military occupied it. He persuaded the Pope to call the archbishop of Tarragona, who was living in Avignon with his uncle, and the Pope received a commitment for peace from the archbishop. A camerlengo of Reus was adorned with the papal tiara and keys of St. Peter after Pere Roger de Belfort gave his coat of arms to the town and later became Pope Gregory XI, who kept it as a camerlengo of Reus.

By the end of the Catalan Revolt war, the town had 800 houses instead of 1200 at the beginning.

The Parliament declared him an enemy of the fatherland on December 16, 1640, and confiscated his goods as a punishment for his inactive participation in the war. It was occupied by French general La Mothe in 1641. In 1705, Reus revolted under the direction of Joan Nebot against Philip V on behalf of Archduke Charles. Archduke Charles visited the town on July 3, 6. In 1707 Reus fell to the Bourbons, but in 1709 it surrendered to the Spanish and French Bourbons. As early as 1710, Reus was back on Archduke Charles’s field. Reus became an imperial city on June 5, 1712, when Elisabeth Christine, the wife of the Archduke, gave the title. It was only in 1713 that the Bourbons occupied Reus for good.

Demographics

With a population of 14,440 in 1787 and 27,257 in 1860, Reus was Catalonia’s second city. From 1900 to 1930, it was overtaken by Tarragona and Lleida. With 30,266 and 35,950 inhabitants, respectively, the population barely grew between 1920 and 1930. By the end of 2008, the city’s population had 108,100 inhabitants, up from 41,014 residents in 1960. A portion of that increase comes from immigration, mainly from Marrakesh. Muslim and other religions make up about 6% of the population.

Festivities

Reus’ principal festivity is Sant Pere on June 29, designated as a national tourist attraction. The tornado, a series of 29 mortar mascots with interlaced bangers, is one of these festivities’ most characteristic and widespread acts. They are arranged linearly around Mercadal Square (where the city hall is located), united by a handcrafted gunpowder line. Before the city hall, the line ends in a square shape, with nine more mascots and more bangers. The Mare de Déu de la Misericordia takes place on September 25.

Among the other notable celebrations are Carnival and Anada a l’Antiga towards Salou. Neighborhoods usually have their festivals.

In addition to the significant festivities, Reus hosts many festivals, such as Cos, a festival dedicated to mime, or El Trapezi, a celebration with circus performances. The Reus Institut Municipal d’Accio Cultural presents the Biennals Internacional de Fotografia Medalla Gaudi in every odd-numbered year. A biannual exhibition that features fine art photographers working in Alternative Photographic Processes (such as Platinum Printing and Gum Dichromate). During each Biennial, a few artists receive the Medalla Gaudi award, and their work is acquired for the Institut Municipal d’Accio Cultural’s permanent collection.

Sport

One of Spain’s most crucial roller hockey teams is Reus Deportiu, which plays in the main league, OK Liga.

CF Reus Deportiu was the team’s association football name.

At the local Estadi Municipal, the Barcelona Dragons will play their home games in the European League of Football.

Tourism

Over the past few years, tourism in Reus has expanded as more and more people visit the Costa Daurada region for summer holidays or some winter sun. Russians are the most significant number of tourists today, followed by French and Dutch travelers.

In Reus, you will find one of the biggest theme parks in Europe, PortAventura World, located near the resort town of Salou. Several tour companies and buses operate services to Reus from nearby tourist destinations, including Salou, La Pineda, and Cambrils.

Accommodations in Reus include small hotels, hostels, and major chains like N.H. Hoteles and Hotusa Group.

Ryanair has recently begun flying low-cost to Reus Airport from many different European and North African locations. Several major charter flights also arrive at the airport from the United Kingdom. Another airport in the area serves those destinations not served by Reus Airport, Barcelona Airport.

Flag of Reus

During 1774-1943, the first flag of Reus was used. With the city arms in the center, the flag was dark red.

Because the color red was associated with the left, which was defeated in the civil war (1936–39), the flag was changed in 1943. As the city arms were argent with a heraldic rose, the new flag featured a heraldic rose in the center. A few minor changes have been made to the flag’s rose since 1943.

A new version of the rose is based on the city emblem. There is official status to the symbol itself, and a local government official has yet to confirm whether this also applies to the flag.

What is Reus famous for?

Over 30 vermouth producers operated in Reus during the 19th and 20th centuries, making it one of the world’s major centers of liquor production. Yzaguirre, Iris (Muller), Miró, and Fot-Li manufacture vermouth in Reus today.
