Reutlingen is a city in Germany that was founded in the mid-1800s and has a population of 115,818 as of June 2018. The capital of the district of Reutlingen is also located there.
Reutlingen is located just south of the German State capital, Stuttgart. It is approximately 22 miles away from Stuttgart. It lies in the Southwest corner of Germany, right next to the Swabian Jura, and that is why it is often called The gateway to the Swabian Jura. The Echaz river, a tributary of the Neckar, flows through the city.
Although Reutlingen is much closer to the old university town of Tübingen than it is Stuttgart, it is the center of a larger region called Neckar-Alb which is home to a variety of major cities. It also makes up a large part of the larger Stuttgart metropolitan area that includes many other popular towns and cities.
Reutlingen appears to have settlements as early as the 4th or 5th century. Sometime around 1030, Count Egino started to build a castle on top of the Achalm, one of the largest mountains in the Reutlingen district with an elevation of about 706 m. One of the towers of this castle was rebuilt in the 19th century, and visitors can visit Reutlingen. It was first mentioned in writing in the so-called Bempflingen treaty which is dated approximately 1089–90.
Around 1180, the Battle of Reutlingen received market rights and the town was promoted to city status soon after. In 1220-1240, city walls and fortifications were first built. From 1247-1343, the landmark of the St. Mary’s Church was built in its current form by this time.
In 1377 Reutlingen joined forces and defeated the Count of Württemberg. Thereby, they were the rulers of a giant part of Germany. Three years later, the Swabian League led by Ulm was conquered by King Rudolf III of Habsburg in 1379-90. In 1519, a later Swabian League came to Reutlingen’s help when Ulrich, Duke of Württemberg attempted to seize the city; the League landed a crushing blow, conquering Württemberg and selling it to Charles V. In 1495 and 1516 the Jews were exiled from Reutlingen persecution of Jewish religious figures.
Reutlingen passed from the Duke of Württemberg’s authority as it began to grow as a free city and was able to join outside troops in the war against the Emperor. These events also led Reutlingen to produce writings that expressed their adherence to Martin Luther and other Protestant reformers. After the French Revolution, France had to fight for its independence for years. Reutlingen’s fate was unfortunate as it suffered a lot during the French Revolutionary Wars. As peace finally eluded, Reutlingen became part of Württemberg.
Reutlingen had a major fire in 1726 when 80% of all the houses went up in flames. Many people were made homeless, but even worse off were the city’s public buildings. 1,200 families lost everything.
The World War II V-1 flying bomb was coordinated and produced in Reutlingen, suffering several allied bombings.
Reutlingen is still democratizing today, but the first to pave the way were Oskar Kalbfells and many others who made history in Reutlingen.
Reutlingen, a city in Germany, became part of the state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern in 1947. It later fully joined that state with Baden-Württemberg in 1952.
Reutlinger Stadtverkehr (RSV), Deutsche Bahn and Abellio Rail Baden-Württemberg are the three companies responsible for running buses.
On the first Thursday after Epiphany, townsfolk gather in homes and halls to play games of dice, with the winner earning prizes or whole Mutscheltag loaves of bread. The Mutschelspiele consist of different games that use tally marks and are scored both individually and by total at the end of the hour or night. The tradition is unique to Reutlingen.
