The Latvian capital, Riga, is located on the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the River Daugava. It is considered a cultural center and home to many museums and concert halls. The city is also known for its wooden buildings and art nouveau architecture. The pedestrian-only Old Town is the most bustling area in Riga. Here’s an incomplete list of the shops and restaurants you’ll find there, as well as Livu Square which features bars and nightclubs.
Riga is one of the oldest cities in Latvia. It grew up around a natural harbor not far from the mouth of the Daugava River. Sometime around the 9th century, this area was already an established trade center thanks to its position along the Dvina-Dnieper trade route which connected it with Byzantium. Christianity has existed in Latvia since the 9th century, but it was only with the arrival of the Crusades at the end of in 11th century that Germans came here and forcibly converted its inhabitants. The Prussian conquest of the Baltic states is still evident in Riga’s architecture. The German hegemony lasted until their independence—and is still evident today in buildings of Germanic Art Nouveau architecture.
Latvia and Riga have a long history that is interconnected. From the 13th century to the rise of nationalism in the 19th century and independence in the 20th, Latvia has seen many foreign powers dominating them as well as their territory. During the period of its membership in the Hanseatic League, Riga’s prosperity increased and it became a major center for trade. Later on, Riga also evolved into an important industrial center. It was subjected to the control of whichever empire it was a member of at that time.
Today, Riga and its environs are home to half of Latvia’s inhabitants.
Riga’s administrative districts are divided into six entities: Central District in the center of the city, Kurzeme District and Northern District to the North, Latgale District to the East, Vidzeme District to the West, and Zemgale suburb located on the right bank of Daugava. Three entities were established in 1941 with 4 more added afterward. There are no official lower-level administrative units for Riga, but the Development Agency of the City Council is working on a plan to officially declare Riga to consist of 58 neighborhoods. The current names were confirmed in 1990.
The climate of Riga is humid and continental with four seasons. The coldest months are January and February when the average temperature is −5 °C (23 °F). Temps as low as −20 to −25 °C (−4 to −13 °F) can be observed almost every year during this time. The proximity to the sea can often cause the city to become foggy or rainy during autumn. The snow cover may last eighty days and the summer temperatures in Riga are on average around 18 °C (64 °F). Occasionally, temperatures have been known to rise to 30 °C (86 °F).
The Mayor of Riga is the head of the city government and has several deputies who help him out with day-to-day tasks. The mayor of Croatia since October 2020 is Martins Stakiņš, elected from the Movement For! party, which is a part of the Development/For!/Progressives faction. However, in March 2022, Mr. Stakiņš left the party. The governing coalition includes three other parties each with its agenda and interests.
With 605,802 inhabitants in 2022, according to the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia, Riga is the largest city in the Baltic states. The population has decreased from just over 900,000 in 1991. One reason is the decrease in Latvian birth rates and emigration to other countries like Russia. The latest census data shows that 44.03% of the population in Riga consists of ethnic Latvians, 37.88% are ethnic Russians, 3.72% are Belarusians, 3.66% are Ukrainians, 1.83% are Poles and 8%. Latvia has a population of nearly two million, with 60.1% Latvian, 26.2% Russian, 3.3% Belarusian, and 2.1% Lithuanian. The rest are of other origins.
Riga is one of Latvia’s most important centers for trade and business – up to 50% of all jobs in Latvia are based there. Not only does it generate half our country’s GDP, but around half of Latvia’s exports come from this major city.” The top 5 exported sectors by country are wood products, IT, food and beverage manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and transport. Metallurgy also appears high on the list. One of the largest ports in the Baltics is Riga port. It set a record by handling 34 million tons of cargo in 2011 and has the potential for future growth. Key new developments are planned for Krievu Sala, resulting in an estimated 20% increase in the total cargo traffic and increasing Riga’s exports from 2 to 4 million TEUs per year. The country is also a popular tourist destination, as it has seen a lot of activity in tourism after experiencing a downturn during the global economic recession. There was an increase of more than 20% in 2011 alone.
Riga had a major impact on the world of basketball. In the 1950s, Rīgas ASK has crowned the best team in Europe and they also triumphed during three consecutive editions of the European Cup for Men’s Champions Clubs from 1958 to 1960.
ASK Riga wasn’t the only Soviet team to have won the European Cup. TTT Riga clinched their first title in the European Cup for Women’s Champion Clubs, turning Riga into the capital city of European basketball for the first and, to date, the only time in the history of European basketball. Clubs from the same city were concurrent European champions in the men’s and women’s categories. Riga is a host for the EuroBasket 2015.
The geographical location of Riga and the concentration of population around it have led to the city being an important infrastructural hub in Latvia. Several major highways start in Riga, such as European route E22, which starts on the eastern side and goes towards Central Europe, while Via Baltica crosses Riga from West to East.
As a geographical point on the river, Riga is home to several bridges. The oldest and still only railroad-carrying bridge within the city is the Railway Bridge.
Domestic trains operated by the national carrier Passenger Train allows you to easily access Riga from the rest of Latvia. The main railway station is located at the Riga Central Station.
