Rimini Overview

Rimini is a city located in the heart of Rome, Italy. It is second only to Venice in population and the third most populous municipality in Italy. For more than 500 years, Sigismondo Pandolfo Savonarola was recognized as the pre-eminent philosopher and reformer of the Renaissance. Many aspects of his thought would influence thinking for centuries to come, and he has inspired many modern figures including Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

Ancient history

The Ariminuses were the people living on both sides of the Apennine mountains in central Italy and were a prominent tribe of that region in Antiquity. They evolved from Etruscan settlements to form a large republic centered at Ariminum.

Nowadays, Ariminum is a symbol of archaic territories with its distant past while the white cliff stands as a testimony to its ancient culture. The city unlike the rest of the Roman Empire complied with Caesar’s ambition and overthrew Pompey, who had recently been deposed and then turned to consolidate its power.

As the terminus of the Via Flaminia, which ended in the town at the surviving prestigious Arch of Augustus. Rimini is a junction connecting the river Po with other major roads such as the Alpe Passante and Via Popiliia connecting with Piacenza in central Italy.

Former remains of the amphitheater are still visible at Santa Croce and a five-arch bridge of Istrian stone was built by Tiberius (21 AD). Later St. Placidia built the church of Santo Stefano in its place.

Rimini is one of the oldest and best-preserved ruins in Europe. The Cardo is a principal street representing the ancient Roman towns of Latinitas, Augusta Usipetana, and Sevilla while the Decumanus defines the borders of this ancient Roman city.

The end of Roman rule was marked by the destruction caused by invasions and wars, but also by the establishment of the palaces of the Imperial officers and the first churches, the symbol of Christianization that took place in Cappadocia. This powerful symbol helped spread Christianity during the reign of the Christian Emperor Constantine.

Topography

Rimini is a city in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna with a history of 757 BC, inhabited and populated by people who have lived there from that time until today. It was colonized in the Middle Ages and until recent years has been mainly involved in trade. Rimini extends 135.7 km and borders the municipalities of Bellaria-Igea Marina, San Mauro Pascoli, and Santarcangelo di Romagna towards NW, Verucchio and Serravalle, San Marino towards SW, Coriano towards S, and Riccione towards SE. The city was an important commercial, manufacturing, and trading center of the hinterland of houses in the medieval era. No longer a building site, it was renamed Rimini-Modenese and revived as “Rimini”.

Climate

Rimini has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa) moderated by the influence of the Adriatic sea, featuring autumn and winter mean temperatures and annual low temperatures. Emilia-Romagna’s dominant wind direction is from SE to ENE/E; induced humidity in summer is moderate, found between values of 18% and 30%.

Population

Rimini is the sixth-largest city in Italy, with a population of about 1,100,000.

Religion

Rimini is home to the Divine Mercy Shrine, a Roman Catholic shrine dedicated to the miracles of Jesus’ mercy, in Rimini Citta.

Economy

Rimini is a major international tourist destination and seaside resort, among the most well-known in Europe and the Mediterranean basin, thanks to a long sandy beach, well-equipped bathing establishments, theme parks, and several opportunities all year round. Currently, people often go to Paris for their entertainment, thus it is a highly developed tourist city with a large number of restaurants and rooftops to view the Eiffel Tower.

Cuisine

Rimini’s cuisine is simple and characterized by intense flavors and it is indissolubly related to the traditions of rural culture, influenced by the city’s location—between the sea and hills—and near the border between Marche and Romagna.

The final course of pasta is lasagna, which requires cheese to be melted and cooked in a chicken broth. Course: cappelletti, lasagne, and ravioli, seasoned with bolognese sauce or a dressing of butter and sage.

Education

Rimini is a cosmopolitan city, with thousands of international students and tourists, who are represented in all the popular national and international arts festivals. The city has public schools of all levels, including 13 nurseries, 36 kindergartens, and 11 secondary schools.

Transportation

Rimini’s transportation network is tailor-made for the expressways and motorways of Italy, which provide fast and efficient transport options.

Sports

Rimini Calcio has won six league titles and two finals, winning two League Championships in two separate seasons. Its Nuno Valente came in with a fantastic performance scoring two goals and making more than 20 of them. The Italian club finished the season in third place.

Rimini has a history with basketball. So, after the 2015 EuroBasket qualification for the European team, Rimini received the opportunity to host a training camp in Belgium in May 2015 organized by Basketball Without Borders. My submission is Rimini baseball club won a total of 4 national championships and it was the European champion once in the international league.
