Roeselare Overview
Roeselare is a Belgian city and municipality in the Flemish province of West Flanders. In addition to Roeselare, the municipality includes Beveren, Oekene, and Rumbeke. This city’s name is derived from two Germanic words meaning “reed” and “open space”: a marsh in a forest clearing.
History
Numerous prehistoric flint tools and Gallo-Roman wells have been found in the area, as well as a small Frankish structure dating back to the 9th century. It was first mentioned in a document dated 821 or 822, in which the former domain of the Menapii was given to Elnon Abbey as the Rollare villa. Baldwin Iron Arm, Count of Flanders, kidnapped Judith, the daughter of Charles the Bold, in Senlis in 862 and brought her to Rumbeke Castle, which used to be a fortress. As soon as Roeselare became part of Flanders, it became part of the county. During Baldwin III’s reign, the rights to build fortifications and hold a public market date back to 957.
During this period, the city received its charter of freedoms and built its first city hall and belfry. Cloth manufacturing was the main driver of the local economy at that time. At the end of the 15th century, the few defensive walls the city had were no match for Maximilian of Austria, who destroyed the city. In 1500, the market hall and Saint Michael church were rebuilt.
Throughout history, Roeselare belonged to the Fiefdom of Wijnendale and was therefore governed by the House of Cleves in the 15th and 16th centuries and the Dukes of Palatinate-Neuburg in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Folklore
Many giant puppets are displayed at Roeselare. Several family members, including Rolarius – the alleged founder of the city – Carlotta and Opsinjoorke, appear at festivities and carnivals dancing to the giants’ music.
There’s also some folklore surrounding the character named Peegie, who is a slick merchant and is, in a way, based on the natural character of Roeselare as a merchant town.

Roeselare was home to the Belgian Second Division soccer team KSV Roeselare until their bankruptcy in 2020. Playing in the CEV Champions League is the volleyball team Knack Randstad Roeselare. Also living in Roeselare is Formula E driver Stoffel Vandoorne.

Another of the city’s oldest streets, it gained prominence after the railway arrived in the mid-19th century. Almost every building on Oostraat has a shop or catering establishment on the ground floor. At the same time, the east end is pedestrianized, and the rest has one-way traffic and wider pavements.

Built between 1862 and 1872, this artificial waterway runs 16.5 kilometers through the Mandel valley. Due to Roeselare’s thriving inland port, the Roeselare-Leie Canal still serves an industrial purpose.
