Rostock Overview

The city of Rostock is located on the north coast of Germany and has been known for their one of a kind university that was founded in 1419. They also have an arboretum, alpine gardens, and more. In the medieval town of Münster, there is St. Mary’s Gothic Church and nearby you can find the Neuer Markt Main Square which has a mix of Gothic and baroque architectural styles.

Rostock hosts Germany’s 4th largest port, with a volume of one million tonnes. Due to its location on the Baltic Sea and proximity to Hamburg and Bremen, Rostock is an ideal trading partner for both the east and west of the country. Heinrich-Heine Strasse is one of the major ferry routes connecting Rostock, Germany, and Gedser, Denmark. It’s one of the most commonly used connections between the two countries. It’s also fairly far from Rostock Airport.

History

In the 11th century, Polabian Slavs founded a settlement on the Warnow river and called it Roztoc. The name Rostock is derived from this designation.

The dukes of Mecklenburg finally managed to enforce their rule over Rostock, which had been traditionally independent. They took advantage of a riot known as “Domfehde” – an uprising of the impoverished population with subsequent quarrels with the dukes. Persistent plundering led to an eventual loss of economic and political power for the city.

In 1565, there was a further clash with the Schwerin dukes. The nobles introduced a beer excise that favored them and had far-reaching consequences among other things. John Albert I reinforced the city of Rostock with 500 horsemen following the city’s refusal to take out the formal oath of loyalty. He then razed (destroyed) the city’s walls for a fortress. April 18, 2018. In the spring following their victory, the razing of the fortress did not go unnoticed.

The city walls were rebuilt into the Lagebusch tower in the 16th century. The inscription, “You enter a state of harmony and happiness,” can still be read on the gate, which is referring to how the original poem speaks to this particular moment in history. In 1584 the Second Rostock Inheritance Agreement was enforced. This agreement put paid to Rostock’s ambition of achieving imperial immediacy. Lübeck had already achieved that status and lost its former tax privileges as a result of this agreement.

The strategic location of Rostock provoked the envy of its rivals. Danes and Swedes occupied the city twice, first during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–48) and again from 1700 to 1721. Later in the early 19th century, French forces under Napoleon invaded and occupied northwest Germany for 44 years (1807–45). General Gebhard von Blücher, a German general who fought in several important battles during the Napoleonic wars, was born in Rostock and decided to surrender right away when the French approached him at the Battle of Jena in 1806. Some of the cavalry charges that Frederich brought during the Battle of Lübeck were done while he led them. The Prussians were exhausted and had neither ammunition nor food by the time they surrendered.

Symbols

Rostock has had three different coats of arms, and the city still uses this imagery today. This “last” coat of arms can be traced back to 1367 and is still in use.

The Signum depicts a golden griffin on a blue background, with bars of silver and red, the colors of the Hanseatic League, below. It can be seen not only on flags and houses but also at bus stops. Bridges, gullies, fences, and ships are all griffins too! And even in restaurants that serve this symbol of protection!

Administration

Since the 13th century, the governing body of the city has been the city council (Rat), consisting of 24 elected aldermen. The chairman of this council would be called the “city mayor” in previous centuries. In modern times there are three mayors who take turns to lead each month. The head of this city has been termed “Lord Mayor” for centuries and an elected official by the people since 2002. This position is now elected directly by the citizens of this city. If a candidate doesn’t get enough votes in the first round, they enter the runoff with the two most popular candidates.

Geographic location

Rostock is located near the center of northwest Germany on its Baltic Sea coast. The city is crossed by the Warnow River.

Rostock is located on the Baltic Sea coast in northern Germany. To the west of the city is Rostock-Warnemünde, a seaside town with fewer people. East of Rostock, at a distance of 10 miles from the picturesque town, lies the inland port. Rostock is a city on the coast of the Baltic Sea in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northern Germany. The city stretches 21.6 km (13.4 miles) from the Baltic Sea to the south and 19.4 km (12.1 miles) East-West across a hilly landscape.

The Academy of Music and Theatre offers graduate degrees in musical fields. The institution was founded in 1994, combining the school of Ernst Busch and the outpost of Hanns Eisler School of Music. Today, the school is a member of the Association of Baltic Academies of Music (ABAM), a union of 17 music conservatories in the Baltic Sea and Israel. The school has also been unique in Europe by offering a post-graduate degree in piano duos performance. The school has two large opera halls in addition to the standard concert halls. Concerts take place daily all year long.

Robotics in Rostock is diverse and you’ll find the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis, two Frauenluthy branches of Fraunhofer Institutes, one focusing on Computer Graphics and one that explores Large Structures.

Events – Hanse Sail festival is celebrated annually in the city of Rostock and brings in more than 1.5 million visitors each year. These ships are a feast for the eyes, as well as an opportunity to explore marine life.

A jazz festival called “Baltic Sea Jazz” takes place every June.

Food and drink

Rostock has its local beer, called Rostocker Pilsner, manufactured at the Hanseatic Brewery. The BarV2 is well-known throughout Berlin, sparking a lot of interest in the German capital city. “Heller Freude,” a special kind of light beer created to commemorate Rostock’s 800th birthday, was brewed as a way to celebrate and share the love that Berlin has for its capital city.
