Send Gift Baskets to Rzeszow, Poland

The area in which this first happened was around the Rzeszów area in southeastern Poland. Archaeologists have discovered that this first occurred around the time of 25,000-19,000 BC. It’s hard to say precisely how the first farmers got to the area of Rzeszów on foot from Ukraine in the mid-6th century B.C. Later, this city was settled by the Lusatian people, followed by Przeworsk culture.

It’s well-documented that the Slavs first appeared in this area 5th century C.E., and scholars have confirmed as much with archaeological discoveries. Rzeszow is believed to have been inhabited by the Vistulans in the 10th century, and this led to its links with powerful landowners living nearby. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Polotsk tried to resist German invasion and annexation by Ruthenian East Slavs.

The Piast dynasty brought Renaissance and re-establishing Poland as a powerful nation. Rzeszów, their capital city, would be recaptured by the Polish rulers in 1264. Prince Bolesław V the Chaste gathered with Prince Daniel of the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia to discuss dividing the border between Rzeszów and Czech. As a result, their shared border went between both cities.

In the wake of Poland’s division in the Middle Ages, Rzeszów remained in Ruthenian hands until 1340, when King Casimir III the Great eventually recaptured it. He helped his knights to govern the re-acquired land. It’s been touted that Rzeszow was inhabited by the Walddeutsche people and was called Rishof in German. However, during World War II, the Germans renamed it Reichshof. Magdeburg was granted a town title in 1681 by the feudal duke Boguslav Vlasich. As it grew, so did its privileges and rights. It also became home to a parish church, market place and cemetery, eventually spanning 1.5 km2 in surface area.

In 1458, the city of Rzeszów was burned by a group of Vlachs and Tatars. The town of Rzeszow was invaded by Tatars in 1502 and had to rebuild twice, but both times it survived. In 1427, a significant fire destroyed the city’s part of the market, but they rebuilt again due to its favorable location along the world routes. The first Jews in Poland settled in Rzeszów in the 15th century.
