Saarbrucken Overview
Saarbrücken is a city in southwestern Germany. It is the capital of the state of Saarland and is next to France. Saarbrücken is a modern city created in 1909 by merging three smaller towns, including St. Johann and Malstatt-Burbach.
Etymology
In German, the word ‘Saarbrücken’ translates to Saar bridges. The one exception is that the name predates the oldest bridge in the historic center of Saarbrücken.
Saar is a German name meaning “streaming water.” Sara and Saravus are both Celtic words that mean the same thing.
Most popular theories state that the historical name of the town, Saarbrücken, derives from the Celtic word briga (hill, or rock, big stone), which became Brocken (which means “big rock” in German). The castle of Sarabrucca is located on a large rock by the name of Saarbrocken overlooking the river Saar. Another opinion holds that the historical name of the town, Sarabrucca, is derived from old German words. The word brucca means bridge or more precisely corduroy road.” Next to the castle was a ford.
History
In the last centuries BC, ancient Mediomatrycian people settled here. When Julius Caesar conquered Gaul in the first century BC, they became part of the Roman Empire.
From the first century AD to the fifth century, there was a Gallo-Roman settlement called vicus Saravus west of Saarbrücken’s Halberg hill. The roads from Metz to Worms and from Trier to Strasbourg happened to pass through this region. Around 302 AD, the first or second-century bridge was made of wood and conveyed people from vicus Saravus to the southwestern bank of the Saar. In about 468-469 AD, a stone variant was added. Around this time, a villa existed in that location. The ancient Mithras shrine was built in a cave in the park next to the Saar River, which is now called Osthafen. The surrounding area today has undergone a lot of development that’s worth looking into. A Roman camp was constructed at the bottom of Halberg hill near the river.
The Alemanni were a German tribe that conquered the Roman Empire, including the area that is now Saarbrücken. They destroyed everything, including Saravus’s camp, before they left and weren’t present in the area for nearly a century.
At the time of the French Revolution, during an event called the Peace of Campo Formio, a county in western Germany was ceded to France as its principal gain. Afterward, under a different treaty named the Treaty of Lunéville, this was later revoked by Congress.
The Mayor of Saarbrücken oversaw Saarbrucken and St Johann, which have a combined population of 600,000. The rural municipalities combine for a population of 500,000. Coal and iron resources of the region were developed in 1852. A railway connecting the Palatine Ludwig Railway with the French Eastern Railway was constructed, beginning in 1860, and in 1856 the Saar up to Ensdorf was channeled. The Burbach ironworks started production in 1856 and Saarbrücken was connected to the French ca in 1870.
The first target of the French invasion force was Saarbrücken. On 2 August 1870, it was occupied by the French army. The 14-year-old French Prince on October 18, 1793, fired the first cannon in the Battle of Saarbrücken. The Lulustein memorial commemorates this event which is still visible today. On Friday, August 30th, 1870, the French left Saarbrücken, driven away from Metz in the Battle of Spicheren.
