Salzgitter Overview

The seven Oberzentren of Lower Saxony are Salzgitter, Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, Hanover, Göttingen and Kassel. Now that you know these facts about Salzgitter, it will be easier for you to pick out what’s interesting about the city.

History of the name

In 1942-51, “Salzgitter” was the name of a borough of the city that existed in Watenstedt. Salzgitter-Bad is what became of it after 1951. In 1951, Salzgitter was renamed “Watenstedt-Salzgitter,” and now it is “Salzgitter-Bad.” The original name of the city was still used, just not as often. The name of a small borough with a few hundred residents is now Salzgitter-Watenstedt.

Geography

Salzgitter is a city that is situated on the hills between the Odenwald Forest and Salzgitter Hills. The city stretches for about 24 miles (15 km) from north to south and about 19 miles (12 km) from east to west. Pitcher Hill, which is located in Hamburg, Germany, is the highest point in Germany at 275 meters above sea level.

Population

History

Salzgitter originated at the beginning of the 14th century around salt springs near the village of Verpstedt (later Vöppstedt). It was named after the neighboring village of Gitter – now a city borough. The name means “up on the salt”. After 200 years of salt production at various springs, the peasants in the area which is nowadays Salzgitter were chartered around 1350. They lost municipal law, however, when being transferred over to the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg in 1667. The city of Salzgitter belonged to the parish of Hildesheim until 1803 when it was then transferred to Prussia. When the diocese was relocated in 1815, it became a part of the Kingdom of Hanover. In 1830, Salzgitter became an independent town and was granted its first municipal law.

After Hanover was transferred to Prussia in 1866, the town of Salzgitter became a Prussian municipality. The town of Vorsalz and the city of Liebenhall were also incorporated as part of Salzgitter. Saalz – also known as Salzed e Gittertor today – belonged to the City of Goslar. It was one of several small villages that were incorporated into the city in 1936.

The large iron ore body in Salzgitter that had been mentioned first in 1310 lent itself well to be exploited for the needs of the war effort leading to the establishment of Reichswerke Hermann Göring years later. To allow for easy development of the smelting action, a unique administration structure in the whole region was thought up. So, Hermann-Göring-Werke Salzgitter was declared an independent city in the Chancellor’s Order of 28 February 1942. Towards this aim, the town of Salzgitter and the municipalities Beinum, Flachstöckheim, Groß-Mahner, Hohenrode, Ohlendorf, and Ringelheim (7 in total, all belonging to the Landkreis Goslar) and Barum, Beddingen, Bleckenstedt, Bruchmachtersen, Calbecht, Drütte, Engelnstedt, Engerode, Gebhardshagen, Hallendorf, Heerte, Immendorf, Lebenstedt, Lesse, Lichtenberg, Lobmachtersen, Osterlinde, Reppner, Salder, Thiede-Steterburg (nowadays simply Thiede) and Watenstedt (21 in total, all belonging to the Landkreis Wolfenbüttel) were merged to form the Stadtkreis Watenstedt-Salzgitter. Most of the neighboring municipality was annexed in 1938, so when the new city was proclaimed on 2.8.1942 it started with 29 boroughs and then gained an additional 3 boroughs as boundaries were redrawn shortly afterward. The Landkreis of Holzminden was transferred from Braunschweig to Hanover, Prussia. Drütte concentration camp was a subcamp of the Neuengamme one and it served as a big labor camp where people were used for slave labor. It houses around 2,800 citizens and the entire structure is divided into four sections. Salzgitter was severely damaged during WWII by several bombings from both countries. After the Napoleonic Wars, the State of Braunschweig became part of Land Lower Saxony and Watenstedt Salzgitter became an ‘independent city in the ‘Administrative District of Braunschweig’.

In 1951, Stadt Salzgitter renamed itself “Stadt Salzgitter”, while the borough was renamed “Salzgitter-Bad”, constructing a connection between the towns. For both of these municipalities, this administrative reform marked the beginning of a new era. On 1 March 1974, they officially became part of Lower Saxony instead of being under the jurisdiction of the town and district capital that they did previously. Iron ore continues to be mined at the Salzgitter mines until 1982. The disposal of radioactive waste has been planned since 1975 in Schacht Konrad, another mining site in the area.

Religions

Salzgitter, the German town of ancient origin, is situated in the southeast of Lower Saxony. The diocese of Hildesheim was founded there in 803 as well. In 1568, the Reformation was established in Salzgitter, and two ecclesiastical superintendencies came into existence: the southern part of the area of the modern city, the Superintendency of Salzgitter, pertained to the Province of Hanover and thus ecclesiastically to the Evangelical Lutheran State Church of Hanover (and, within it, to the Consistory of Hildesheim); the northern part (the Superintendency of Lebenstedt), however, belonged to the Free State of Brunswick and therefore to the Evangelical Lutheran State Church in Brunswick.

The creation of the town of Watenstedt-Salzgitter in 1942 created a new political and ecclesiastical relationship for this area. All parishes on the property including Salzgitter now belong to the Church of Brunswick. The city of Salzgitter has two additional parishes which are not within their original boundaries. The administration of both Propsteien is included in their territory.

Beginning with the Reformation and through the continual reformation of the Church, parishioners in Salzgitter were originally under the jurisdiction of the Hildesheim diocese. However, with a separate deanery established in 1882, those Roman Catholics now belong to that deanery instead.

Besides the two major denominations, there are many congregations in Salzgitter which belong to free churches. These include a Baptist parish, the Church of God, Plymouth Brethren, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church, as well as several New Apostolic Churches of different denominations.

Salzgitter has had an influx of Muslim immigrants since the 1970s and according to census data in 2011, it had the highest percentage of Muslims among major cities in Lower Saxony.

Politics

After the creation of Salzgitter, a state commissar was set in place as provisional Mayer of the city of Watenstedt-Salzgitter. After World War II, the military government of the British zone of occupation installed Council orders and decrees. Furthermore, there is an elected Council in place. The Council elects one of its members to Mayor (German: Oberbürgermeister) as leader and representative of the city. Since 2001, the office of the mayor of New York City has been merged into one, simply called Mayor. The mayor represents the city and leads the Council – Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Salzgitter features a silver furnace behind a single silver pinnacle, with a green base and two saltern instruments, while the walls are decorated in all gold to contrast the dark sled placed on it. Behind the furnace, there is red ground. Two wheaten ears lie on it.

According to the coat of arms, Salzgitter stands for agriculture on one hand and industry on the other. The coat of arms is often visible in many places where there are villages in Salzgitter as it relates to agricultural contributions like that of the town’s founding.

The Coat of Arms Watenstedt-Salzgitter was used before 1951. Up until then, Salzgister had different coats of arms. This also goes for the former town of Salzgitter.

As seen in many German cities, the Salzgitter logo is recognizable and often used. It is a picture of a green field with a white twisting way that narrows towards the horizon.
