In the mountainous Basque Country of Spain, San Sebastián is a famous resort town on the Bay of Biscay. Etymology
Donostia’s Spanish and Basque forms mean Saint Sebastian, regardless of appearance. Basque place names contain a dona/done/doni element that means “saint,” derived from the Latin domine; the second part of Donostia contains a shortened version of the saint’s name. Two hypotheses are held regarding the evolution of the Basque name: one suggests it was Donasa(b) astray> Donasastia > Donastia > Donostia, while the other claims it was *Done Sebastiane > *Done Sebastiae > *Done Sebastie > *Donesebastia > *Donasastia > *Donastia > Donostia.
Geography
It lies on the southeastern coast of the Bay of Biscay, north of the Basque Country. There are three beaches in San Sebastian, Concha, Ondarreta, and Zurriola, and four hills: Urgull (near the old part of the city), Mount Ulia (extending east to Pasaia), Mount Adarra (south of the town) and Igeldo (looking over Concha Bay from the west).
In the last two centuries, San Sebastian has mainly been built over the wetlands of the Urumea river. During the first half of the 20th century, the riverbed of the city center and the districts of Amara Berri and Riberas de Loiola were diverted to their current canalized routes.

Climate
The climate in San Sebastian is oceanic (Köppen Cfb), which means that summers are warm and winters are cool. San Sebastian generally experiences cloudy or overcast conditions for most of the year, usually with some precipitation. The city has approximately 1,650 mm (65 in) of rainfall annually, evenly distributed throughout the year. On average, the city experiences around 100 mm (3.94 in) of precipitation during the summer months, making it noticeably sunnier and drier. January temperatures average 8.9°C (48.0°F), while August temperatures average 21.5°C (70.7°F).
Prehistory
Intxaurrondo and Astigarraga are the two adjacent cities that are the first evidence of stationary human presence. Unearthed remains date from 24,000 to 22,000 BC, including carved stone knives used to cut animal skin. Researchers have determined that the Upper Paleolithic settlers were modern humans (Homo sapiens) hunters and that the climate was much colder.
Middle Ages
During the Middle Ages, the monastery of St. Sebastián, located in the town of Hernani, was donated to the Abbey of Leire by Sancho III of Pamplona after a long period of silence. On the site of Izurum, King Sancho VI of Pamplona chartered the city in 1181, with jurisdiction over the entire region between the rivers Oria and Bidasoa.
As a result of Castile’s conquest in 1200, Alfonso VIII confirmed the city’s charter (fuero), but the Kingdom of Navarre lost its primary way out to sea. Gascon-speaking colonizers from Bayonne and beyond began to settle at the foot of Urgull as early as 1204 (or earlier), leaving a lasting imprint on the city’s identity over the centuries.
As part of a marriage pact, Navarre acquired the right to use the city as a seaport in 1265. With many Gascons inhabiting the town, trade with other European ports and Gascony flourished. The city avoided the destructive War of the Bands in Gipuzkoa, the only village in the region to do so. After the war ended, Gipuzkoa only joined the town in 1459. From the beginning of the 15th century, a line of simple walls encircling Donostia is attested, which indicates that the city remained primarily out of war until the 16th century. Donostia’s Middle Ages ended in 1489 following a devastating fire. Building with stone instead of bare timber, the town began a new renaissance after it burned to the ground.
Economy and Industry
Trade and tourism are the most important economic activities. Among the best-known Spanish tourist destinations is San Sebastián.

Transport
Euskotren Trena, the railway network of Euskotren, serves the city. As well as providing trains to Bilbao and other destinations, Euskotren also operates the San Sebastián Metro, which together with Renfe’s Cercanas San Sebastián, covers the larger San Sebastián metropolitan area. From Madrid to Hendaye in France, connected to the French rail network, trains frequently depart from San Sebastián railway station. In Hondarribia, a nearby municipality, San Sebastián Airport also serves the city. As of right now, San Sebastián Airport does not have any international destinations. From San Sebastian city, you can get to Bilbao airport in 98 kilometers (61 miles). San Sebastian is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Biarritz Airport in France.
Gastronomy
Basque cuisine is renowned in San Sebastián. Restaurants with Michelin stars are found in large numbers in San Sebastián and its surrounding area, including Arzak (San Sebastián), Berasategi (Lasarte), Akelarre (district Igeldo), and Mugaritz (Errenteria). Despite its size, it has the world’s second highest per capita number of Michelin stars, after Kyoto, Japan. In 2013, San Sebastian had two of the world’s top ten best restaurants, according to The World’s 50 Best Restaurants ranking. In addition to these restaurants, the Old Quarter and other bars in the city serve pintxos (small-plate dishes similar to tapas).
Basque gastronomical societies were also born here; the oldest recorded took dates back to 1870. Additionally, the Basque Culinary Center offers the first university degree in Gastronomy in San Sebastian.
Sport
Real Sociedad is the leading football club in the city. With the 2009–10 Segunda División championship, the club won promotion back to La Liga after three seasons in the Segunda División. As a founding member of La Liga, Real Sociedad has played in the top division of Spanish football for many years. In the early 1980s, they won the Spanish championship two years in a row (1980–81, 1981–82). Real Sociedad’s female team won the Queen’s Cup for the first time in May 2019. Aviron Bayonnais and Biarritz Olympique play rugby union matches at the Anoeta Stadium at the Anoeta Sports Complex.
San Sebastián hosts a well-known cycling race every summer, the one-day Clásica de San Sebastián (“San Sebastián Classic”). There is a lot of interest in cycling races in Spain, and the Clásica de San Sebastián professional race is held in early August. San Sebastián has hosted this event annually since 1981. Previously known as the UCI Road World Cup and UCI ProTour, the race is now part of the UCI World Tour. Since 2019, women have been able to participate in the race.
