A city in the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of Tenerife, the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and the island’s capital. A total of 206,593 people live within the administrative limits of Santa Cruz (2013). Santa Cruz’s urban zone extends beyond the city limits and has a population of 507,306 and 538,000 within the metropolitan area. Tenerife is the largest city in the Canary Islands and the island’s principal city, with nearly half of the island’s population living there.
Santa Cruz lies 210 kilometers (130 mi) off the northwestern coast of Africa within the Atlantic Ocean, in the northeast quadrant of Tenerife. There are 1,300 kilometers (810 miles) between the nearest point on mainland Spain and the island of Ibiza. In the period between the territorial division of Spain in 1833 and 1927, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands until 1927, when a decree ordered the capital to be shared. Cruise ships from many countries arrive at the port, an important communications hub between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The Canary Islands’ domestic and inter-island communications are centered in this city.
In the past, Santa Cruz belonged to Menceyato Guanche Anaga, the island’s most easterly region. The city that is now Santa Cruz had a few names throughout its history: Añazo or Añaza (Guanche name), Puerto de Santiago Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Santiago de Tenerife, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (current), which means: “holy cross of Tenerife,” in honor of the day when the city was founded, when a Christian cross was planted on the site of the present city center.
Approximately 2000 years ago, the Guanches occupied the area that now houses the city and municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as evidenced by archaeological sites found there. As the island’s first inhabitants, the Guanches called the area Añazo or Añaza. The famous Mummy of San Andrés is one of the most important archaeological remains from the region’s aboriginal past. There are also caves with some remains of mummified animals and stones with engravings of royals. Menceyato de Anaga (aboriginal Guanche kingdom of Anaga) ruled this area, one of nine kingdoms that divided the island.
Castilian troops under the command of Alonso Fernández de Lugo arrived on the beaches of the present city on 3 May 1494 and founded a military camp that grew into the city. It was from here that Tenerife was conquered. As part of the foundation, Alonso Fernández de Lugo placed a large wooden cross on the day of disembarkation (3 May) during the Catholic festival of the Invention of the Cross. It was founded in 1496, the same year that the island was conquered and conquered by the Guanche aborigines, that San Cristóbal de la Laguna became the island’s capital.
Santa Cruz inaugurated the 21st century with a tremendous expansionary and commercial boom that is primarily manifested in architecture with the construction of emblematic buildings such as the Auditorio de Tenerife, the work of Santiago Calatrava or the remodeling of the Plaza de España according to the design of Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.
A torrential flood marked 31 March 2002. The phenomenon of cold drop, characterized by torrential rain accompanied by lightning, affected the metropolitan area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It resulted in the deaths of eight people, the disappearance of 12 people, and the injury of dozens.
The population peaked at over 200,000 in 1990. With a combined population of over 380,000, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna form a continuous urban area.
Most of the island’s population is European, predominantly from the Iberian Peninsula, Spain, Portugal, and some Guanche descendants. Latin American immigration has occurred (especially from Cuba and Venezuela) as well as from Northern and Sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the population professes the Catholic faith, but there are also small communities of Hindus and Muslims. Significant historical minorities include Indians (Sindhi), Koreans (see Koreans in Spain), and Russians. In recent years, crime has decreased in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and the city has gained a reputation for tolerance. In June 2008, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the first city in the Canary Islands to display the rainbow flag alongside the City Council flag.
As opposed to the nearby city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which is the seat of the Tenerife Bishopric, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has traditionally had a much more secular character. It led to the establishment of institutions of deep secular tradition in the city, such as the Masonic Temple of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the country’s largest Masonic centers.
In addition to being the hub for Tenerife’s motorway network, Santa Cruz is the center of the Tenerife Metropolitan Area. The 85 km long Autopista TF-1 connects the island’s south, including Playa de las Américas and other southern resorts. Three routes connect the motorway to Santa Cruz and La Laguna, starting near the Auditorio.
Santa Cruz’s Autopista TF-5 links Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, and the island’s northern side, passing through La Laguna on its way.
Three quays serve regular ferries, fast ferries, cruise ships, and merchant ships at the Santa Cruz harbor, one of the busiest in Spain.
The Tenerife North Airport, formerly Los Rodeos Airport, is located near the Autopista TF-5 on the city’s western outskirts.
It is located next to the Autopista TF-1, 75 kilometers south of Santa Cruz, and ranks 7th in Spain among tourist airports. A railway network is planned to connect this airport to the capital.
In addition to being the hub of all the TITSA bus routes and the new Tenerife Tram service, the Intercambiador terminal is also a significant parking lot.
The first tram line (opened in 2007) starts at Intercambiador and ends at La Laguna’s Avenida Trinidad. The bar will also be extended to Tenerife North Airport in the future. The second tram line (which connects with Line 1 at El Cardonal and Hospital Universitario) opened in 2009. The main article is Tenerife Tram.
Cabo-Llanos (south of downtown) is the location of the new expansion. A significant building boom in this area has been nicknamed “Manhattanization,” where tall, modern buildings and street layouts mimic American cities.
Among the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has the highest concentration of shops. In Santa Cruz, the economy is primarily based on services. In addition to trade, tourism, import-export, the seaport, major political and financial institutions, and the most important companies, the region has vigorous economic activity and development. Construction is an important sector, while industry, except for oil refineries and food processing, is relatively small. Santa Cruz has regenerated many areas of the city and modernized its infrastructure, building brand new areas, malls, high buildings, and some charismatic structures, such as Calatrava’s Auditorio or the Congress Hall, César Manrique’s Marina and the not-yet-completed Óscar Domínguez Museum of Modern Art and Culture (IODACC) and the new Plaza de España layout, both by Basel-based Pritzker Prize winner studio Herzog & de Meuron. The artificial Las Teresitas Beach is being renewed under the direction of French architect Dominique Perrault.
The climate in Santa Cruz is tropical semi-arid (Köppen climate classification: BSH), with less precipitation in the summer than in the winter. At 25°C (77°F) in the daytime and 18°C (64°F) at night, its average annual temperature is 25°C (77°F). January has the coolest temperatures, ranging from 19 to 23 °C (66 to 73 °F) during the day to 15 to 16 °C (59 to 61 °F) at night, with an average sea temperature of 20 °C (68 °F).
