Santander Overview
The city of Santander is the capital of the Cantabria region on the north coast of Spain. On the rocky La Magdalena Peninsula, at the mouth of the Bay of Santander, lies the Palacio de la Magdalena, once the royal summer residence. There is an octagonal cupola and Gothic cloister at the Santander Cathedral in the western part of the city center. The Paseo de Pereda promenade borders one side of the Jardines de Pereda gardens.
History
Little written and archaeological evidence exists about the origins of the first human settlements in Santander. It appears, however, that ancient settlers chose the north side of the bay, sheltered from it and safer from the storms of the Bay of Biscay, on the north side of the promontory of Somorrostro and along the ancient Becedo estuary, for practical purposes As a result of the hillside’s good visibility, a stable settlement could be established here throughout the Middle Ages, providing a good spot for spotting potential attackers.
While the Abbey of the Holy Bodies was first mentioned in 1068 in a draft document created by King Sancho II, it was founded by Alfonso II the Chaste on the hill of Somorrostro in the 9th century. The abbey is named for its holy relics, which include the heads of Saint Emeterius and Saint Celedonius and the graves of unknown martyrs.
Alfonso VIII of Castile granted a charter to the city in 1187.
The population was contained within the walls of two pueblos between the 12th and 13th centuries. In the older Puebla, on the hill facing the bay, there was a castle, an abbey, and a cloister. There were three rows of houses, divided by Rua Carnicerias and Rua Mayor, where prominent people of the town and the abbot’s canons lived. The Puebla Nueva contained the convent of Santa Clara and San Francisco, which gave its name to one of the main streets; Other streets of importance were the Rua de la Sal, The Cavalcade Palace, Ribera, Don Gutierre, Puerta de la Sierra, Gallows, and the Rua Arcillero. Across the river that divided Becedo, a bridge connected the two pueblos, which were joined by the King’s shipyards that took wood from the Cantabrian forests. The villa was required to provide a ship to the monarchy each year.
At the end of the 15th century, Santander had about 4,000 or 5,000 people.
An excellent harbor in the Bay of Santander is responsible for the city’s existence. Santander played an essential role in Castile’s trade with the New World in the late Middle Ages. The town was officially incorporated in 1755.

Climate
Santander has an oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb), with average monthly temperatures oscillating around ten °C (18 °F).
As of 21 January 1957, the minimum temperature was 5.4 °C (22 °F), and the maximum temperature was 37.8 °C (100 °F) on 27 June 2009. In August 2003, the maximum daytime temperature averaged 27.1 °C (80.8 °F), the warmest month on record. There are, however, very few warm months (mean temperature above 22 °C (72 °F)). In August 1940, downtown recorded a temperature of 40.2 °C (104.4 °F).
Tourism
There are many old town bars and restaurants, and the beach of El Sardinero is a few kilometers away.
The lower temple of the Cathedral of Santander, known as “Cripta del Cristo,” was built around 1200 on the site of older Roman structures. It is organized into three naves with a length of 31 meters (102 feet) and a width of 18 meters (59 feet). Romanesque and Gothic styles are combined in their design.
Overlooking the entrance to the Bay of Santander is the Lighthouse of Cabo Mayor.
The Parque de la Vaguada de las Llamas is located in the city’s center and covers 11 hectares (27 acres).
